Cats Suddenly Won't Eat!

My three year old cats have eaten the same food each day since we had them. They always beg for it from about 3pm and we feed them at 5pm. Same every day.

Today I gave them their dinner and they won't touch it, but they are still begging for food. Any idea why they would both do this? So weird as they don't seem unwell, have had lots of water and shade etc in the heat - and they have had many hot days and haven't refused food. I'm confused!

Chuck it and try again before stressing. Might have been a bad packet.

HenBob · 10/08/2022 18:22

Okay thanks, I will throw it away and wash everything to make sure that it's okay.

It's because they are cats and have now decided that the food they used to love is now the worst food in the world!

HenBob · 10/08/2022 18:28

@dementedpixie I wondered that, but they are such greedy cats I never thought they'd be fussy 😂

Maybe because they are too hot.
DCatGlyndŵr has taken to eating about 10pm just lately.

DH has taken to wetting a patch of lawn and giving Leroy his tea on there.

I do NOT recommend this approach 😂

Seriously though, it's likely to be the heat. They're hungry, they want something, but they're too hot and it's too much effort.

Have you tried hand feeding them from a spoon? I've had some success with this recently (yes I am a mug)

Sometimes mine do this. I've found that getting rid of the food, cleaning the bowl and replacing with fresh sometimes does the trick. But my two are quite fussy and refused some perfectly respectable pilchard sorbet earlier, only to tuck into their Hills Science Plan without restraint.

Haha! I am guilty too! 🤣

I have cleaned everything and redone it but still no eating. I'll leave it and see if they have eaten it by the morning. I'm definitely not spoon feeding them - I've got three kids already!

Good plan, if they're still off their food tomorrow you can try other things. Any other unusual behaviour though and call the vets - the heatwave affects cats in funny ways!

Neither of mine will eat its too hot. They just nibble on biscuits. I've taken to giving them some wet food after dark when it's cooler. And resort to tuna.
