Why isn't cat using litter tray?

She's just a kitten and I've had her about 6 weeks. She's a Ragdoll and is 20 weeks old.

She's slotted in well with my existing ragdolls who are both under 6 months old. They're a docile breed anyway but they all sleep curled up together, play together and groom each other. There are no tensions between them.

She is settled, happy, eats well. A vet check had the vet saying she was in perfect health. She wasn't taken from mum too early or anything like that

The issue is she is weeing in the house. All poos are in the tray and she will happily wee in the tray if you pick her up and put her in there - she very occasionally will go and wee in there too

But mainly she will wee elsewhere too. In a corner or under the sofa. The place varies

What can I do?

Things I've tried ...

A litter change. Made zero difference - have tried a few now

Plenty of trays. They have one each plus a spare. I've tried lid on/ lid off

The trays are clean and spot checked and cleaned regularly.

Feliway plugged in

Speaking to the breeder. Breeder at a loss as she was litter trained when she left there

A vet visit. It isn't cystitis

Being hyper vigilant and placing her in there every half an hour. As soon as I go out, she will just wee wherever

Cleaning the wee. Thoroughly cleaned with a proper enzyme cleaner

So .. anything I'm missing? Driving me mad now! Thanks in advance

I had this with the two rescue cats I have, they pooed and weed everywhere, except the trays, I did the same as you, lots of trays, different litters, sprayed with the Pet Odour remover and it did all sort out, I think it is just they are a bit unsettled to start with, this all took at least two months to sort out.

I put mine in the litter tray every few hours for a few days to get them used to it and it worked

can yours reach the tray?
when mine were tiny I had a cereal box cut and put some catlitter in there for a couple of weeks then as they got bigger I moved to the normal litter tray

She might have had a bad experience on the litter tray - spooked by one of the other cats perhaps. Is there anywhere she can access that they can't, so she had her own tray?

One of my cats just hates litter trays. When she was a kitten we had another kitten at the same time. She wouldn't use the same tray as him and he would always squeeze out a wee to scent the tray as soon as clean litter was put in it! Can you keep one litter tray for her use only in case she's put off easily by the scent of another cat?

smelters · 31/07/2022 22:46

How many litter trays do you have? I think it's supposed to be one per cat plus one extra which sounds a lot! I have two cats and two trays but one of my cats hates using it and goes outside from preference.

@GreenEyedFox she does poo in there so no issues at all getting in it. She will also happily wee in there when I pop her in after meals/ sleep/ play time etc

Problem is, I'm not always around to do that as I work etc

@smelters we have a litter tray each and a spare so plenty to go round

@BerylBird almost impossible unfortunately. I can't think how that could possibly work

And I'm flummoxed because she will go in there for a poo. She's not scared of the tray or anything like that

She's cute - but annoying

Try shutting her in a small space with the litter tray for a while everyday
Something like a downstairs loo overnight. It takes away her choice of weeing elsewhere and helps to reinforce the tray.
It may well be that at the breeders she was in a pen, or one room with the litter tray so the choice to use it was more obvious.

Sweetpeaa · 31/07/2022 22:54

@Lolabalola tried that but she cries and cries and cries and scratches the door. She's very bonded to her friends! She also knows what a litter tray is for as goes in every single day of her own accord to poo

Is she neutered?

My female kitten would mark outside the tray regularly until we got her neutered. She always pooed in them but peed on the floor or carpets. When we got her done, it stopped overnight.

So, in short, get her spayed!
