Poorly after vaccination- normal?

Hi there, looking for a bit of general advice.

Our kitten had his second and final vaccination today. He had his first set about three weeks ago and went back to the vet today for the second lot.

After the first lot he was fine, normal behaviour etc. Today however he is very sleepy, not interested in food or water and his body feels really warm.

I'm probably just overreacting but just wanted to check this is normal in the same we we would have a bit of a reaction etc after a vaccination.

It's not an unusual reaction, even in adult cats. Sometimes vaccinations just wipe them out for a bit, maybe even 24 hours. See how he is tomorrow. Call the vet in the morning if you're still worried.

Yes it's very common. I had a cat once that used to be so poorly after her jabs that the vet decided to give them to her separately rather than combined.

Yes, this happened to one of mine. Very lethargic which was/is totally unlike her. She snoozed under the sofa for at least 24 hours then perked up just when I was about to phone the vet. Totally fine. Only happened the first time - she’s nine now.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/07/2022 22:20

It’s normal if worrying. See how he is tomorrow.

Exactly the same thing happened to my Ollie after the second course. I was so worried I almost took him to an emergency vets! So glad I didn't - he was fine after a couple of days. The following year he had no reaction to the jab at all! Such a relief.

Thank you all for your comments. I'm feeling much better about it all now! He has had a little water since my initial post and licked a bit of gravy off his food. I'm much happier now he's had water.

Feeling a bit foolish now for panicking! I spent years not liking cats and finally caved on getting a kitten after much pressure from my daughters and now I'm head over heels for him!

Thanks for the advice x

You will soon have more photos of him than your daughters on your phone.

Yes It's fairly common I think.
I was in a panic as my two tiny kittens had the same reaction after their first injections. They looked so ill, shaking and whimpering. I rang the out of hours vet, he said keep them warm and quiet. Ring next day if no better. I stayed downstairs with them all night. They were fine next day. I was so relieved.
