Biting cat

My cat has recently turned 1 y/o. He regularly bites me. No one else, just me. He beelines for me and meows, if I don’t do what he wants quickly enough - he nips my toes. It’s been going on for a while but getting more frequent - it’s at least once a day now. Today I was pegging out the washing in my slippers so he couldn’t get my toes - he bit my ankle. He drew blood and his little sharp teeth bloody hurt!

How to address this, because it’s getting a bit ridiculous to be honest, he bites me so much that I flinch in anticipation when he comes near my legs. He’s lovely with the kids and has never even so much as scratched my husband but I’m clearly his slave who needs to move faster/work harder. Any tips?

He sees you as his mom/fellow cat. You can hiss at him.

He needs to be neutered

He is neutered.

What would hissing at him achieve?

Hissing is a "stop that and bugger off" warning in cat language, it can be very effective - especially if done with eye contact.

Timwith2noses · 02/07/2022 21:25

Oh really? Well then that is worth a try!

Try it they get very offended. I used to do it to the Bengal.

Ooh - I never thought of hissing at our cat when she bites me. Will give it a go.

A high squeal also helped with my cat. He was a rescue and hand reared so didn't have litter mates to learn to play with. He didn't understand that his bites hurt, so with time squealing meant he learned they did.

He used to stop and look at me in surprise. Never completely broke the habit but he used to follow it up with an apology kiss!😆

Our cat was the same and - following advice from here - I hissed at her every time she bit. It worked surprisingly quickly.
