Ok ... talk to me about Persians please

I know they require daily grooming... can be harder to litter train... can have more health issue-but what are they like as pets?

Following on from my previous thread about shy rescue cat/new kitten...The available kitten (male) is a Persian.

Do they get along with other cats? Do they have mad kitten phase? Please share experiences good and bad! Current cat (Female spayed) is shy and not at all sassy, I absolutely do not want her bullied or pushed about.

But I do go out to work, so she's home alone all day (house cat)

Sorry to start another thread, if I do this, I want to go in eyes wide open! Thanks you 🙂

I'm sending put the batcat-signal to @Toddlerteaplease.for words of wisdom.

Persians are just the best! Trying to type this with Cheddar sitting on my face.
They are calm and gentle, but not very bright. Very affectionate.
They don't climb so your kitchen worktops are safe!

My long haired ones get a quick brush a couple of times a week and a thorough comb out every couple of weeks. However some have very cottony coats and do need of daily. She goes to a groomer roughly every 3 months for a proper tidy up. A regular hygiene trim to keep the bum clean is a must! They sometimes need help cleaning their eyes. Picking the dry muck off is very satisfying. Grin a quick wipe with cooled boiled water does the trick.

They need to be indoor cars, as they just aren't clever Enough to go out, mine go into my enclosed garden. But they aren't that bothered about it. They are not hunters, thank God!

They are prone to health issues, my first two were rescued from a kitten farm and ran up huge vets bills, and one died at 8 from HCM. She had no breathing issues. The other does have breathing issues, but they don't seem to bother her. She sounds like she's very bunged up.Her nose is tiny. Many of their issues came from their poor start in life.
My third Persian is a short hair and she had a better start and had had no issues. And her breathing is fine.

When I got mine, the rescue lady said I'd never have another breed of cat again. She was so right. They are amazing as pets.

I have never had any litter tray accidents.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 09:53

One of mine was incredibly timid. But it didn't take her long to rule the roost completely. She was an absolute diva. The other two are more passive. A magic is now top cat. But cheddar is so laid back she's horizontal. Make sure the rescue check for a heart murmur though.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 09:55

I work 13 hour shifts and my two are fine.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 09:58

Your resident cat is likely to be top cat. You might find it's the making of her. It was for Magic when I got Cheddar. She's blossomed.

Apologies for the multiple posts, but go for it OP. You won't regret it. (Just get the best insurance you can!) please message me if you have any questions. Honestly, Persians are the best!

OldSpeclkledHen · 28/05/2022 13:00

@Toddlerteaplease Thank You so much! 😀😀

It wasn't something I was even thinking about... Current cat was rehomed as a single cat, and she's very skittish, that my biggest worry. But she's not super cuddly (and selfishly I want something that likes cuddles 😳)

I've read introducing a new cat, young male is prob best, I just don't want to set her back or be bullied.

Also, how soon did you leave your kittens to go to work?

Sorry, I'll prob have loads of questions still ..😳

Mine were five when I got them. I think I had a couple of days off work and then went back. But one of them hid for a week, so the peace and quiet was good for them. I can't really imagine a Persian kitten being particularly dynamic though.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 13:09

It took years for my first two to be lap cats. But cheddar has absolutely no idea what personal space is. Loves tummy tickles abs demands to be picked up. She's very vocal and the other is finding her voice.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 13:12

I would think that a normal moggy will certainly have the upper paw. Persians are incredibly placid. When one of mine did get into a fight, with a cat in the garden. Everyone who knew her was amazed that she'd even do that!

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2022 16:32

@OldSpeclkled do you have a photo of him?

OldSpeclkledHen · 29/05/2022 17:33

@Toddlerteaplease your's are lovely! I love the Ginge XX. Thank You so much for all your input and advise :)

So today I've been investigating insurance and spoken to the lady... (and frantically googling Jackson Galaxy how to introduce cats) as am seriously thinking about it (yikes)

Hopefully a friend is coming over next weekend to help catify and put up a cat highway (I've been meaning to do this for ages anyway - this has just kicked me up the bum to get it done) so current cat has vertical space too

I don't really want to post pictures just yet (just in case I don't get him...its easy to be swayed by a cute kitten face - and OMG he is SUPER cute - but I'm trying to be practical head over heart) but then if he come home it'll be pic overload lol (but he's a brown tabby!)

I plonked cheddar down in the hall in her basket. Magic came over for a sniff and I saw her visibly relax. And that was that! She gets on better with Cheddar than she ever did with her own sister. She's very protective of her.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/05/2022 18:05

Cheddar would like you to know that she's not ginger, she's red!

RandomMess · 29/05/2022 18:07

Generally rather dim compared to some other breeds, generally calm and cuddly 💕

OldSpeclkledHen · 29/05/2022 18:22

@Toddlerteaplease Strawberry blonde then :)
That interesting about Magic sister, current DC was rehomed apart from her sister as they didn't get on... (and reading up this past couple of days its common for sisters to not get on?!)

😂😂😂 Completely correct!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2022 10:21

@OldSpeclkledHen have you decided yet?

OldSpeclkledHen · 05/06/2022 19:11

@Toddlerteaplease ahhh sorry thought I'd updated, but obvs my peri brain fooled me again 🤣🤣

He was reserved by someone else - which is absolutely fine. It would have been too much stress at short notice to get the house ready (and not have holiday booked!)

The seed is planted though, and it's a longer term plan which am factoring whilst redecorating (making more cat friendly space) so watch this space! Thank you for all your input 😘 I love MN for advice xx

Look at St Francis Persian rescue.

Persianflufffluff · 05/06/2022 19:31

I loved my three Persians. Sadly the last one died a few years ago, aged 17. So friendly and loving. A trim round the bottom. Grooming everyday.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/06/2022 19:53

Cheddar and Magic are excellent beginner Persians. I'll let you borrow them so I can have an uninterrupted nights sleep!
