Decent cat food

Hey,

We have a new kitten coming in a matter of weeks.

We want to provide her with decent cat food rather than the meat constitute rubbish imo it can't be good for anyone

Does anyone have any recommendations for an affordable yet decent premium brand? I'd like it to be as cost effective as possible while also I do recognise it'll be more expensive than less decent brands.

Also considering ease of getting hold of. A mix of amazon, supermarket and pets at home will be likely used.

We will be feeding part wet and dry.

Many thanks

I use akela 90:10 grain free which is 90% meat and 10% veg,£60 for 10kg,when I had just 1 cat it would last 5 months, now with 3 it lasts 2,my cats adore it,internet only but it's free delivery and you get it in 2 days.

My kitten loves Blink wet food and Lily's Kitchen kitten pates and dry food. Certainly not cheap but grain-free and healthy!

Indoorcatmum · 22/05/2022 14:19

Thrive for dry, Blink or Thrive for wet!
Congratulations!

Whoareyoumyfriend · 22/05/2022 15:07

Brilliant. Thanks all for the advice!
Turns out she's staying with us.

I have a free dry Lily's kitchen sample and have bought blink for wet.

She's 9 weeks and a dream. She's already using her litter tray and slept well. She follows my boys around

She's gorgeous!!!!!

Untamed for me - my cat is allergic to cat food and previously was only on Royal Canin, it's horrible food though and not appetising.

Untamed does a mixer starter box and oh heavens I could eat them myself. My cat loves them Smile

Calyx72 · 24/05/2022 21:37

What a beautiful kitten!

Anystarinthesky · 25/05/2022 15:41

She is so cute!

coffeecupsandfairylights · 26/05/2022 06:36

She's gorgeous!

But in my experience with cats - they'll eat what they like and that's often not the healthy, nutritious, high-meat content food you have in mind for them 🤣

Whoareyoumyfriend · 27/05/2022 23:22

Thanks all for the advice. I also found out today that she is infact male!!

He seems to be happy on blink wet food and james wellbeloved dry.

My only piece of advice is that an 8 pouch box of Blink was £6.90 a year ago and it’s now £7.90. Poultry prices are set to rise quickly due to grain supply issues/war in Ukraine, as grain is used in poultry feed. Not such an issue with tiny kitten tummies but quite the outlay when your tiny kitty is a strapping adult with a choosy palate. We’re weaning Sodding off Blink with turkey mince from the human food section of Sainsburys because it works out cheaper than Blink. 🤦‍♀️ I need to get him onto something much more affordable but he shuns everything offered and chucking uneaten food out is driving me nuts. (He gets fortified cat kibble too for the additives he needs for good health.)

silentpool · 27/05/2022 23:47

Mine gets Applaws dry and a variety of raw meat (chicken, turkey or kangaroo mince), canned tuna and home poached chicken over the week. Tins are treated like take aways here but he gets a few a week just to hedge my bets on the additional vitamins etc. He gets beef organ meat treats as well as dental treats.

That way all human grade meat can be purchased on special and frozen in portion sizes. I put a whole chicken into the instant pot and shred it for him and freeze. This has reduced my spending considerably. Vet is aware and the cat is doing very well.

I was curious about taurine supplements for cats after posting earlier and found this: www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/supplements_specialty_cat_food/taurine/434145

While the amazon subscription discount is nice, we’ve found that nearly every month, part of the cats order is not available, nor is the substitution. So whatever you go for, make sure you have another option to buy from.
Also - remember the golden rule of cat food, if you buy it in bulk, they will decide they can never, ever touch another morsel again or they will keel over. Because they are the lord and master of you and your wallet from here on.

Ballsaque · 28/05/2022 01:02

My cat has Katkin. It’s delivered frozen once a month. One pouch a day and he isn’t moaning for food all day like he was when he had Felix.

it’s steamed fresh food.

boatahoy · 28/05/2022 08:14

My cat loves Scrumbles both dry and wet and in.all the flavours. She consistently cleans her bowl which she has never done before as always been a picky eater. It's lovely to see her enjoy something so much. However, as previous poster said I'm too scare to buy a large bag in case she then goes off it as cats are so fickle Hmm

handbagsandholidays · 28/05/2022 08:17

Our cat loves applaws tons and either applaws or James well beloved dry x

LadyCampanulaTottington · 28/05/2022 08:26

We have a lot of high % meat, whole prey food and they lethargically poke at it. The shit whiskas that costs €2.59 in the supermarket gets devoured. Idiots.

Ours eat a mix of Purina fillets, Canagan, and Animonda Carny

Danielle1989x · 20/05/2024 23:32

KATKIN - Amazing for your cats
if you wanted to trial it I have a code which gives you 14 days of food for FREE and it’s free delivery too
use code DANSAN820 and give it a go
no more smelly poops and shiny coats

sweetkitty · 20/05/2024 23:39

My overlords are eating Royal Canin just now as Overlord No1 is on a prescription diet for kidney stones this has meant that Overlords 2&3 have decided they are also on it (they aren’t I’m just giving them Royal Canin Indoor Sterilised) Overlord 4 is on a mixture of Applaws dry and wet (don’t ask)

I have 2 fatties and 2 normal sized cats and am saving up for some microchip feeders

Whoareyoumyfriend · 21/05/2024 18:14

Popping back to my very old thread. I am the OP. Said female kitten was a male kitten and he's now two. Still cute but a little nippy
