The litter tray

Transition from litter tray to outside

Cat people please advise - we have a kitten who has just started to go outside. I'm sure at this point our previous cats just decided to stop using the litter tray and do their cat business in the garden instead. This one though has not made the transition by herself - what's the best way to help encourage her? I tried mixing in a bit of soil with the litter to get her used to a different feel and smell but she wouldn't use it, I might have used too much though. Any suggestions or tips that worked for you gratefully received.

It just takes time tbh
Although we still have the tray even though it is very rarely used now

Move the litter tray closer and closer to the door and then put it just outside the door for a while before you take it away completely.

For the first time ever I have a cat who prefers the tray to outside, and I think it has to be the cat's choice.

And if you keep your cat in overnight you still need a tray anyway.

Mine have been going out for a while now and they still come in to use the tray and then go put again! If I put one outside they just use the one that is still inside! I have heard putting their soiled litter in a patch where you want them to go in the garden helps.

Thank you all for your tips, I will try putting some used litter outside. If she decides she prefers a tray then that's what she shall have. Shame though, cat litter is expensive!

I've got 2 cats that don't use a litter tray and one that does. Tesco sell a cheap litter, and Lidl, but it's a bit on the heavy side.

You can get cat litter in bulk from ZooPlus - I pay around £35 for 60l of it and it lasts months.
