Does anybody have any book recommendations for stories about cats? I'm not really thinking along the lines of A Street Cat Named Bob but maybe something more fictional?

We had to put our lovely black cat to sleep yesterday and I just feel like I would like to listen to a good cat-based audiobook. I feel like I never want to stop thinking about him.

It might not be what you had in mind, but I loved "if cats disappeared from the world".

For fiction though, nothing beats Paul Gallico's "Jennie"

Mousehole Cat. It's short, but there's a lovely audiobook of it. I'll see if I can find it.

I think it's this one - the cover is the same, anyway. Mousehole Cat Cd https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1844289109/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_CQGEQHEPN58ZQ3YD9A6X

The cat who came to dinner - Elizabeth Downey

The cat who came in from the cold Deric Longden

And all the books suggested by PPs, especially the Travelling cat chronicles

Aww, thank you. I love Mousehole Cat, and the illustrations in the storybook are so beautiful. It always makes me want to try star-gazey pie! I will have a look if there is an audible version, I reckon it would be great to listen to before bed.

The cat who came in from the cold is a lovely book. It’s Deric’s own story of gaining a cat and it’s told in such a sweet and funny way.

I’m sorry about your little one ❤️

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/05/2022 15:23

How about the Minack chronicles?

Thank you for your suggestions, I have just had a look at the Deric Longden books online and they sound great. They aren't available on Audible fortunately but I will keep an eye out for them when I next go book shopping.

Never heard of these before but they sound lovely! We always dream of living this kind of lifestyle, in the countryside with a few animals. Thank you for bringing them to my attention.

Also Jennie by Paul Gallico, and there's another one by him, can't remember the title, it's a manual from a mother cat about how to care for her kitten before she dies.

watcherintherye · 08/05/2022 15:32

I second the ’Minack’ books by Derek Tangye. Something very comforting about them!

Kat1953 · 08/05/2022 15:33

@newtb it's not thomasina is it? That's another gallicoe cat one I think

sassafras123 · 08/05/2022 15:35

Paw Tracks at Owl Cottage not sure of author but lovely book.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/05/2022 15:38

I was quite young when I read them. I'd read my way through the children's section and wandered over to the adult's section in the little local library. The kind librarian let me borrow them and I read them all. I'm not sure I always understood them but I remember the cats and the daffodils the most.

MarionVeal · 25/07/2022 23:24

Can I recommend my books Mew, the Rescue Cat. It's for children. It's beautifully illustrated and is a true story.

I would also recommend these books by Deric Longden, they are lovely and funny

I read this years ago and loved it, it's about a cat who solves murders and has something of a snarky personality.
