Help! Cats tip over water containers

Snog · 07/04/2022 12:47

I'm at my wits end with my cats.
They had a water fountain but constantly tiled it over.

I've tried a different design of water fountain and all sorts of other containers including one with a large silicone mat as a base and a stainless steel bown that fits inside.

They still tip everything over. Clearly they need access to fresh water, but how?

We use large dog bowls also. They have some outside also and means the outside ones don’t need topping up daily ( they prefer old water )

TeenPlusCat · 07/04/2022 15:44

If you don't like dog bowls for any reason, then you can also get very heavy bowls for reptiles.

Theunamedcat · 07/04/2022 15:44

My cats are fine with most water containers but I've noticed one of them sticks his paw in the metal one before he drinks from it like he is finding where the water level is? He is also the cat that spends most summers in the bath I fill it up a little he paddles in it and has a splash around

Anomalocaris · 07/04/2022 15:56

I also use the Mason Cash small dog bowl. It is heavy!

We got a travel one for dogs that is non spil as ours loved to tip it then paddle in it. Can't remember the name but it has a plastic disc in that drops down as they drink to stop it being spilled.

Just googled. Think it was Road Refresher type.

Another user of the large ceramic dog bowl, one of my cats can only drink standing in the water.
We also have an outdoor bowl (bucket) filled with rainwater that they prefer

HarrietSchulenberg · 07/04/2022 18:35

Our cat used to refuse to drink "house water", he'd only drink from plantpots and puddles outside. I think he just preferred rainwater. The dog does too although he will happily guzzle from his bowl in the kitchen too.

@Electrified

We got a huuuge ceramic dog bowl. DCat now drinks from the pond....
Grin bloody cats!

I have mine on a deep tray then it doesn't matter when it spills everywhere.

chipshopElvis · 07/04/2022 19:11

Could you get a big/heavy plastic storage tub and put the bowls inside it? Won't matter if they upturn them if in there.

AnyCakeButBattenburg · 07/04/2022 20:04

Most cats like to drink from a large bowl, so that their whiskers fit in. My cat has got a pasta bowl from Asda.

Pixiedust1234 · 07/04/2022 20:09

Didn't realise so many other cat owners used dog bowls for the water, thought it was just us Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/04/2022 22:46

I think looking at that cat it’s fairly obvious that he never does anything wrong, ever.

He is the picture of innocence.
