Worried about my cat

I posted on here when DCat lost a fang about 5 weeks ago. He seemed to recover fine, was back to eating dry food, all seemed ok.
Then I had to take him in to the vet about 10 days ago - he wasn't eating, just seemed "off".
Since then he's spent more nights there than here Sad He had a bad UTI and was on the wrong ABs for a few days. He's lost so much weight. Thursday they noted anaemia for the first time, which was worse today. Bladder not blocked. He's eating bits in the vet's but not much.
No one seems to have any idea what's going on and every time I see him he just seems worse. He's currently just over 4kg so has lost over 1,500g in a couple of months, and he's a big cat so his bones are sticking right through.
What should I be pushing for? He is having ABs and regular blood tests but he hasn't had any scans.
My poor boy Sad He's only 5.
Thanks if anyone has any ideas.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your lovely cat. I can't advise really, except to say that you know your cat better than anybody, and should go with your gut reaction.
I speak with a bit of knowledge as my rescue cat who's about 8, is constantly ill and has cost so much heartache and expense. One thing I do is constantly ask questions.
I really hope you get to the bottom of his illness. Good luck and keep us posted

Is there another vet you can try? A veterinary hospital, a vet with an excellent reputation, or one someone can recommend? There are 3 vets in my town, one with a glowing reputation. I don't go to them as am very happy with the vet I do go to, but I would try them if needed. Likewise, there's a veterinary hospital nearby who are brilliant.

Hope you get to the bottom of itSmile

Oh he's at a hospital, they operate 24/7, no concerns about competence. I'm just getting a bit desperate trying to push for answers, and starting to worry about cancer. He's just gone so quickly downhill Sad

Have they checked his remaining teeth? He hasn't been hit in the face and it hurts to eat, has he?

PenguindreamsofDraco · 26/03/2022 18:09

Teeth seem to be fine they say.

Thanks everyone.

One of my boys had a parasite infection eating his red blood cells. It was easily treated but he did die not long after at 12 which back then was usual for cats so we don’t know if that contributed or not.

Has he been tested for FIV? My boy was fine but suddenly lost his appetite and just seemed really poorly, like he'd given up on life. He was weeing outside of tray and vet thought it was stress related UTI (despite him being the least stressed cat ever). When he didn't pick up we had loads of tests done but everything seemed normal until he had a seizure and they ended up testing for FIV and leukemia.

Beamur · 26/03/2022 19:34

I'd want to know what's causing the anaemia.
Have they given him anything to stimulate his appetite? He'll struggle to shake off illness if he's not eating.
One of my cats was really unwell recently and stopped eating. Vet gave her an antihistamine. Not for allergy but to try and get her eating. It did work (plus chicken, prawns and lick e licks)

PenguindreamsofDraco · 26/03/2022 21:39

He's negative for FIV and FeLV.
Vet thinks it's an immune response but wants to see the Coombs result on Mon before starting treatment because if he's wrong the treatment would be dangerous it seems. Meanwhile my boy has lost another 150g today and barely had the strength to lift his head up.

That's heartbreaking. Poor boy and poor you.

SaggyOldClothDog · 26/03/2022 22:47

Fingers crossed you get to the bottom of it soon - it's hard when you see them so poorly but you don't know how you can help them.

Beamur · 28/03/2022 15:48

Any news?

PenguindreamsofDraco · 28/03/2022 17:27

Thank you for asking!

He's home, on the basis that he's now only borderline anaemic and I'm in a better position to tell if he's acting normally than they are.

He's really tired, grumpier than usual, and picking at food, so very much a waiting game.

I'll take him in for more blood tests on Thurs, unless he goes downhill again before then. Which he might, I've only spent a few quid on him today, he might start feeling under valued Grin
