My cat has been missing for 4 months

As the title says, my beautiful 2 year old cat has been missing for 4 months now, all through December to now.

I just don't understand what can have happened - he went out one morning and just never returned. He's been lost before by getting in a van and I miraculously managed to find out which van and where he'd got to. This time, I have no idea. He could be anywhere and I can't post on every local Facebook page in the country!

I'm hopeful that he'll be scanned at some point (if he's still alive) and we'll be reunited. He's a very distinctive pedigree breed and people notice him wherever he goes so I don't think he'll have gone under the radar wherever he is which makes the total lack of sightings even more strange.

I don't think he was stolen as he gives everyone except me a very wide berth and won't accept any strokes from anyone!

Has anyone ever had a cat vanish without a trace and had them come back?

Are you in Nottingham OP? There's one here that's been missing for that long. The posters break my heart.

thecatneuterer · 24/03/2022 17:20

I've reunited cats with owners after many months - even years sometimes. See this story that I was involved with for example

www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2267728596571320&id=154255827918618

And there have been countless others like that.

HeadacheGrey · 24/03/2022 19:00

My cat has also been missing since January, It's awful isn't it.
I'm still hoping someone will find him and get him scanned.

My other cat, who died recently of old age, went missing when she was young but a man brought her back after 4 months, so don't give up hope OP Thanks

ofwarren · 24/03/2022 19:03

One of mine has been missing for a year now. He's chipped so I'm hoping someone has stolen him rather than him being dead.

burnthur5t · 24/03/2022 19:17

Our one year old girl went missing ten years ago. She was chipped. We tried everything, never found her

I've always thought that somebody took her and has kept her as a house cat, just my gut feeling. I sometimes look at photos of her and her brother who we still have luckily when they were kittens and it's so sad

foodaddict21 · 24/03/2022 19:19

My friend had a cat missing for 5 years. She got a call from a vet 20 miles away 5 years later, as he'd been handed in & they scanned his chip. Hopefully you won't be waiting that long & your cat returns soon! Xx

prettyprinceofpartiez · 24/03/2022 20:31

Thank you for the responses - some happy some sad. It's a real mixed bag. My boy is a glitter coated Bengal, very distinctive which may or may not be a good thing depending on who's noticed him. I would hope that he's so clearly loved and cared for that someone would spot him and scan him but it hasn't happened so far. The waiting is the hardest. My worst nightmare is waiting for 10+ years with no news at all 😞 I miss him so much and it just fills my thoughts All the time. It's the worst.

I'm sorry OP. My friend's cat went missing and turned up a year later. He's firmly settled and happy back home again. In that time she got another cat and had a baby. He slotted right back in no problem.

I hope your lovely Bengal comes home soon.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 24/03/2022 21:13

Was he neutered op?
We had a tortie queen found 6 months later. Been living rough at our very local shops.

dodobookends · 24/03/2022 21:19

A family member found hers last year after several months of the cat living rough several miles away, so don't lose hope. Someone she knows saw a post on facebook about a stray cat in the area, put two and two together, and told her about it.

Mistressofnone · 24/03/2022 22:04

The Litter Tray was a great help when I wanted to keep a stray that had been visiting us for months. She was so pretty I assumed she belonged to a neighbour. After several months we pieced together that she was a stray. Add a few more weeks of sourcing a cat carrier and finding an opportunity to get her to the vets to be scanned!

The owner was thrilled and said she had been missing for 4 months and they had assumed the worst, but actually I think she had been missing for much longer as she had been hanging around for at least 7. I must add the neighbour eventually allowed us to adopt her!

Bengals are so beautiful with much personality, I'm sure she is safe somewhere with a naughty neighbour who might have been giving treats. Let's hope as the summer comes she will come back to you.

Mine has been missing since 24th of November OP, so around the same amount of time!
He was 14, we did have a sighting (and a tick tock video 🙄) and borrowed a trap from Cat Rescue but still didn't manage to get him!
He just disappeared, it is absolutely heart breaking, I still cry on a regular basis!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 25/03/2022 16:08

Just an idea if he isn't neutered op
. Browse kittens for sale in your area. Keep a look out for similar ones. Sadly he could be being used for breeding..

I'm so sorry, i remember seeing your thread around the same time as I lost my boy. I don't think many people understand it as a kind of grief. It's a loss of a loved one but with no closure whatsoever. If we just knew what had happened it'd be easier dealing with life without them. Sending love x

How wonderful you found her owners and they were able to know where she was, and you were able to adopt her. A happy ending all round! My boy is my baby and has been there for me through some very tough times and I wouldn't be able to give him up though! I desperately hope he isn't cold or hungry but the thought of someone keeping him makes me feel sad too 😢

Thanks Pretty!
I hope we both get our lovely cats home!
We have had such a huge cat shaped hole in our lives that we went to see 2 rescue cats tonight & pick them up on Saturday

I won't ever give up looking for my boy though!

Oh that's very exciting 🥰 as you say, not a replacement but fills the feline hole in your life!

I've had a sad day, lots of kitten photos coming up on my Timehop as we got him two years ago, and finally got around to making a claim in his insurance as it runs out soon. Hoping it tempts fate and the universe will send him back!

I know that feeling! The tempting fate.
Part of me hopes he's on the doorstep in the morning! 🙃 🙏

Soringhaze · 01/04/2022 20:46

I'd assume he's stolen. I really wouldn't let a distinctive pedigree cat outside if you get another one. Lots of people steal them and sell them on. I doubt he's dead so perhaps that's a consolation. Hopefully he just has a new life somewhere else.

oracleit · 03/12/2024 02:50

Mine Is missing since 17th July this year, o feel sorry but also you need to keep going in life. I don't know what happened, I left to work as always and when back the cat was gone. I don't think it will be back is December already. Just make me things he must have hated it here if this happened 😭

My friends young cat went missing for almost a year… they had given up until she just rocked up at the back door one day! She had grown quite a bit, and her collar was tight so wherever she had been, she was clearly eating okay! No clue where she had been whilst she was missing! We were all amazed!

so I hope one day your cat does the same.. x x
