Appropriate present after a beloved cat has died?

My best friend’s cat has died. She was 16, so made it to a great age. My best friend’s daughter (my goddaughter) is so, so upset. She’s 7. I’d like to show her I’m thinking of her, so I thought I’d like to send her something.

My goddaughter loves soft toys, so I thought maybe a really special little kitten soft toy. But now I’m looking at them online, I’m thinking: is that a bit weird? Your beloved cat died, here’s a cat toy?!

What do you all think?

And what would be a nice thing to do in this instance?

A card or a little memento. Nothing food or flowers, I ate custard donuts when dh was first ill and can’t look at them now.

How about a little locket which if she chooses can put a picture of her can in?

I sent a rainbow coloured sun catcher with a cat charm on it to friends who recently lost their moggy. And I wrote "place this somewhere sunny and warm, and remember your special friend and all the love you shared"

A family member got me a present when my cat died, and honestly, it just upset the hell out of me. Every time I looked at it it reminded me of my loss. I gave it away. A thoughtful card with a caring message is enough, and perhaps you can do something nice together.

When our cat died, a friend gave us a little card with some forget me not flowers in. Thought that was very sweet and not over the top

*forget me not seeds

I bought a little paw print heart from here when a friend’s dog died and she loved it. I’m not sure if the pawprint is appropriate for cats (I’m a dog person.

I wouldn't want or expect anything other than a card.

Ah I really like this idea

just a card is lovely. Sometimes people don't get how big the loss of a pet can be. When our last cat was PTS I got cards from my neighbour and from MIL, which was really touching as they're not pet people.

purpleme12 · 18/03/2022 20:56

I think a card or a present like the above ideas would be lovely

BertieBotts · 18/03/2022 20:59

I was so sad to lose my cat when I was 11, I think the toy would have been fine. Or maybe a story book about cats or something about the rainbow bridge? The sun catcher is lovely too.

Thank you - such absolutely lovely suggestions on here!

The vet did this for me , my fur baby died at home . I don't have a suitable burial place so took her down to the vets who took care of her for me , her ashes were scattered in a memorial garden and I was sent a pack of forget me not seeds and a card a few days later , was really touched
