Any suggestions on the cause of this skin condition? I understand biopsies and swabs would be needed but any ideas from the photos would be appreciated.

No idea on that one sorry but the poor cat! That looks so sore.

I feel so sorry for this cat. He’s not mine and based at a rescue abroad but they’re struggling to get a result from vets so this was a desperate attempt for an answer

I recently saw a picture on Instagram of a cat that had been doused with hot or boiling oil that looked similar. The picture was from a rescue abroad and they had blurred the worst bit so the picture came up in my feed without warning.

OP, could this have happened to this cat or is it more likely to be some disease?

Definitely a disease/ parasite as the cat is a rescue. It has started to clear up but comes back again. I think the main issue is a language barrier with the vets/ vet care isn’t the same as in the uk. Thank you for the suggestion

Ouch that looks so sore! There's clearly a deep skin infection going on, and so a swab would definitely be my priority with 4-6 weeks worth of antibiotic course to try and control it. The concern would be there are fairly rare manifestations of cancer that can look like that and that's where biopsies would be helpful. I would also be concerned about underlying immunosuppression (mainly fiv and felv depending on where they are in the world) to have let the lesion become so out of control. I would maybe suggest the vets consider talking to the veterinary wound library and asking for advice from them, they are phenomenal and have helped heal some awful wounds.

Thank you so much. It must be something quite rare as they’ve been to six vets but no success so far.
