Is my kitten sad?

Hi all, we have a 4 month old kitten who is utterly attached to me (sleeps against my chest / gazes up at me with paw outstretched towards me), social as anything, generally very gentle & well behaved unless with the zoomies, smart (already trying to open cupboards), tolerates my very full on 3.5 year old, adores play... basically perfect... BUT...won't really play much on his own at all and mews SO much. We absolutely cannot afford an additional cat and the house is frankly not big enough anyway. Does anyone have any advice? We play at least 4 times a day with him, 2 of those sessions at least 15 mins long. They're generally at roughly same time each day too. Any ideas gratefully received as it's really stressing me out, poor kitten! Thank you

What kind of toys have you got for him so far?

GreenCat44 · 09/03/2022 21:44

I recommend one of those laser toys. It's the only toy my cats never get bored of. I switch it on when they're under my feet and i don't have time for playing. I get 15 minutes peace and they get a treat once they've worn themselves out Grin

We had a great toy with lazer one end and feather the other and it spun Round randomly and the kitten went wild.
You charged it up with phone charger so no batteries.

My son has a pair of Siamese kittens and we got them a Trixie plush bird for doorframes, it dangles and then bounces when they catch it . They have loads of toys but that is one of the better ones for getting them to play alone .

Yeah this.

We need to see him to see if he looks happy.

But I am sure he is, it's just you're his world at the moment!
How old was he when you got him?

Hello all, I keep struggling to load this message but here goes again... thank you for all your replies.

Our little boy is just about 4 months now. You can see him in this pic. His fave toy is a rattling mouse pulled on the end of a string. A green lizard type fishing rod toy also gains a fair amount of attention. Also a long piece of fabric/ribbon type thing with feather at the end of it and a feathery tail thing which I move around / near my body in the same way. With the zoomies, he appreciates balls flung up and down the stairs. But only then. Also likes to chase balls around a circular thingo we have but that's almost the only independent play he does! He has seemed a bit less talkative since we put a 2 tier climbing tower up high, which he's really taken to climbing up and sitting up top at ceiling height.

Loves hiding inside and attacking a soft fabric bag. Was interested-ish in one of those randomly moving bugs but it lasted all of about 2 days. Again was interestedish in an inert rat like stuffy with feathered tail but seemed to last all of one day.

Greencat, thanks, I should add I've been reluctant to get a laser as I'm worried it's a bit unfair he can't actually catch anything...? What are your thoughts on this from experience? I nearly got that spinning thing sunshineandrainbow, so maybe I'll just do it, thank you! Floralnomad that sounds good, will definitely look at that... :D

Kitten was nibbling and licking my ear in bed this morning. He does love me! But wish he'd talk less as I can't understand him!

Mine don't seem to mind not ever catching the laser but they have been known to knock the whole thing over and use it as a kicker toy! I usually give them a treat once they've worn themselves out, just so they get something for all the work!

Snozzlemaid · 14/03/2022 07:54

We have a treat ball that we put dreamies in. She has to push it around the floor for them to fall out.
Keeps her amused on her own for some time.
