Anyone just got a kitten, or getting one? Thought we could chat about all things kitten (like the puppy threads in the doghouse).

We brought home our kitten (and 4th housecat) yesterday.

This is Dove

@IsThisAkissingBook thank you 😊. The cat tree is from Amazon. Super quick easy to build and very sturdy.

Love everyone’s pictures!
We are bringing home this little cutie a week today! We have had cats for many years before our last one passed away last year. But not had a kitten for maybe 15 years and I am getting slightly anxious about it all - I don’t know what a kitten needs at all!
I feel slightly stupid asking this but what is the best way to bring her home? Teen DD is coming - should she have her on her lap? We can bring a carry crate but I don’t want to traumatise the poor love - would cuddles in the car be better? What did everyone else do?

Definitely in a carrier @Hanswurst, you don't want to risk her spooking and escaping. Kittens are tiny horrors and imagine if she ended up under the pedals or something.

ItsRainingTacos · 13/02/2022 09:36

@Hanswurst what a beautiful little one 🥰

Definitely a carrier. We found the soft carriers to be more comfortable and cosy for ours. Also, good idea to get everything in adult cat size as they grow so quickly.

ClariceQuiff · 13/02/2022 09:41

@Hanswurst Ask if you can borrow a blanket from her breeder that will smell of her cat mum, and pop it in the carrier - it will reassure her, and you can then put it out at home for a few days while she settles.

ChickyNuggies · 13/02/2022 09:51

Oh my goodness me a Sphynx!!! ❤️❤️

I have two Sphynx, one who is 18 months and one who is 6 months and they are my entire world!!! Mushroomy is definitely the word for them!!

The older one is and always has been an angel cat. She was the first cat I've ever had and lulled me into a false sense of security so I would get another one.

The 6 month old kitten is a terror, eats me out of house and home and generally Billy's everyone who lives here. But, at least he is cute 😂

Is this your first Sphynx?

ChickyNuggies · 13/02/2022 09:52

Bullies, not Billy's 😂

IsThisAkissingBook · 13/02/2022 10:58

@ChickyNuggies yes my first sphynx. We have two ragdolls and a Norwegian Forest. He is so far the easiest kitten I have had, loves a fuss but eats so much!
We brought a cat/dog fleece bag with us but to be honest he did sleep on my daughter's lap. The breeder sent him with a blanket which smelt of mum/litter mates. My Norwegian definitely would not of stayed put on a lap. We had quite a drive to get him it was very difficult to find a gccf breeder of sphynx.

Great advice! Thank you so much all. I will have a look for a soft carrier now. DC and I are so excited!

IsThisAkissingBook · 13/02/2022 16:09

This kitten is like a hot baked potato that needs to be on my shoulder all the time. I've never known a cat be so clingy. He is worse than my chihuahua and he definitely thinks I gave birth to him.

Yes they are very very snuggly!!!! And hungry!!! Enjoy! I miss the kitten stage so much. I would have another if it wouldn't end in divorce 😂

IsThisAkissingBook · 13/02/2022 19:02

I wish I could have had two, but he was very expensive. But he's from a very experienced gccf breeder.

I always think Sphynx cats look so angry... but in an absolutely adorable way!

Here are my two when they were very new... they're coming up to 8 months now so are starting to look like proper kitties but they're the first cats I've had since babies and I'm madly in love with them.

He does have an angry look but is the most loving kitten I've had.

Hello again cat mummies, I am looking for your recommendations please for cat litter. I've just used a pack of Catsan which is fine but does nothing for the odour (🤢). I keep one litter tray in the downstairs cloakroom and one in the cat bedroom (aka the gym - essentially an exercise bike in a box room). The hallways and landing smell of cat litter 😬. I clean out poos straight away but the litter has been in the tray for almost a week now so I'll be changing it today. Looking at my selection of cat litter, just wondering which one to open - sanicat silica crystals. sanicat classic or felight non clumping.

IsThisAkissingBook · 15/02/2022 20:19

I use catsan for all 4 of my house cats (two ragdolls, enormous Norwegian forest and kitten sphynx). I find it the best litter myself but I do a complete change of the trays every other day. I remove dirt straight away, and I have 5 extra large trays in total. The kittens tray has a complete change every day because he poos and wees quite a lot but I've heard this is common with sphynx. I have never seen a kitten eat so much.

I can't get over how cute Dove's little tank-tops are 🥰

IsThisAkissingBook · 15/02/2022 21:00

My daughter who is 11 is off school for quite some time because she almost died last year, she can't look at screens so has enjoyed learning to crochet. She made all his crochet tops and his blanket. I knit him some, because he is still too small for most of the bought ones.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter; I hope she's doing well now.

She's a fantastic crocheter, the tops are beautiful - amazing detail!

scooterbear · 15/02/2022 22:28

We are getting our kitten on Thursday. We haven't had a cat since our last one died 3 years ago-but enough time has passed now so I'm looking forward to it. The only slight worry will be how the dogs react to it -they were fine with our old cat but they grew up with him-this will be all
New. I've got a baby gate to help separate them as needed!

ItsRainingTacos · 15/02/2022 23:21

@IsThisAkissingBook oh my goodness, I hope your daughter is doing well now. She's super talented - I'm loving her work!

Thank you for sharing re: litter tray. I've opened the lavender silica crystal litter - rooms already smell much better 👍

@ClariceQuiff exciting times! Hope your kitten settles in quickly the dogs get on in no time. Please post pics ☺️

ItsRainingTacos · 15/02/2022 23:22

I meant @scooterbear

kittenkipper · 15/02/2022 23:33

It's raining tacos - I found cats an a bit too smelly. I've switched to cats best this last week and I think it's an improvement. Very slightly more expensive but if it continues to keep smell down (I'm perhaps overly sensitive) then I'll stick with it
