Why does my cats head stink?

Boy cats head stinks of wee. No other part of his body does, no toilet issues, eating and drinking as normal (he drinks an extraordinary amount of water for a cat but has done since he was a kitten).

Girl cat couldn't get the angle right I think.

Has he somehow managed to wee on his own head??

Sure it’s his head and not his teeth/breath?

JorisBonson · 06/02/2022 20:12

Definitely his head. I unfortunately went in for a kiss.

Have you put a flea treatment on recently? Mine always smells for a day or two afterwards. Otherwise could it be an abscess.

JorisBonson · 06/02/2022 20:13

No (but thank you for the reminder!!).

Oh god I hope not. Girl cat had one on her face a few years ago and it was 🤢 (didn't smell like wee tho).

He's due his jabs so I'll have a chat with the vet when I call to book him in.

Our cat had mouth ulcers - quite a common response to bacterial infection following a cat bite apparently. It stopped him being able to clean himself properly and his head started to smell first. Vet gave him meds and we wiped him gently with a wet paper towel twice a day. He appreciated the assist, poor little bugger.

Thanks @JennyForeigner. I'll be on the phone to the vet in the morning.

He’s rolled over in his tray?

JorisBonson · 06/02/2022 20:38

@Fluffycloudland77 quite likely. He's quite the idiot. Picture for proof.

Tom cat sprayed him I bet.

JorisBonson · 06/02/2022 20:41

Didn't even think of that @Adatwistscientist. He does have form for trying and failing to make cat friends.

Mine frequently face plants when going into his litter tray. I really don't get how he manages it. But yeah. Stinky head.

Topbird29 · 06/02/2022 21:41

Such a cutie! Could it be an ear infection? If smell worse near the ear, it could be, so would need to see the vet. Our old lady got an ear infection that wouldn't budge and she deteriorated - but she was 19 and also had kidney problems, so was just her time.

If it's a sudden smell and he's allowed out, I'd say he's been sprayed. However, it won't do any harm to get his mouth/teeth checked just to rule out anything that's causing him discomfort.
