New kitten not eating

It’s been 24 hours since she’s been with us and she hasn’t eaten yet. We have the same food the breeder had. Just seems totally uninterested. Is this normal? Should I offer her some tuna?

How old is the kitten?

CovidCorvid · 29/01/2022 16:48

13 weeks.

She’s very alert and playing with toys.

If she is quite young (less than 12 weeks, and even more so less than 8 weeks) then it's very very important that she doesn't go too long without eating. They can get weak and hypoglycemic very quickly and that can be life threatening.

If older, probably not as much of an issue - NB - as long the kitten is bright and lively, and there's nothing else going on like vomiting or diarrhoea!

Try offering something palatable and ring your vets if she still won't eat or if you have any suspicion that she is unwell

Definitely no vomiting or diahorrhea, seems the picture of health. Playing with toys and exploring. Purring away.

OK, that's not such a worry then. It's very normal for cats to hold out for 48 hours or longer when in a new home, without drinking, eating, pooing or weeing. If it's a small kitten it's more of a worry, but 13 weeks isn't that small.

Yes, try the tuna.

Alfixn · 29/01/2022 16:53

Ah, slow typer, didn't see her age when i posted.
Reasonable to offer her a small amount of something else this evening and see if she will take it for you. Keep a close eye on her form

CovidCorvid · 29/01/2022 16:58

Thanks both of you, feel reassured. She’s had a wee and a poo. Will try the tuna.

Maybe she doesn't like the food bowl? Our kitten was a bit like this at the start but she would eat dry food from our hands and we could then lead her to her bowl. I still need to pick her up and point her nose right at the food or she just won't eat.

CovidCorvid · 29/01/2022 17:10

I’ve tried two different bowls, might try a plate. I’m pointing her right at it.

Currently scoffing tuna off a plate!
