Sofa fabric that cats won't scratch??

Current sofas are very old and have been ripped to shreds (in places) by cats. Would like to order new sofas but hesitant to spend £££ if cats are going to ruin them...

In your experience, is there any fabric which cats are not so keen to scratch?? Velvet??

@TheChip - great idea about getting a dog, the rest of the humans in the house would be happy with that. The cats less so!

Our cats don’t scratch (thankfully) but they do parkour over our sofa.
We bought a new one last year which has a suede/leather type fabric and it’s looking good so far.

TBH, I think it depends on the cat. My previous cats destroyed the carpet in a doorway but never touched my fabric IKEA sofas (both sets just a woven type fabric). My current cats haven't gone for the sofas or the carpet despite having the same alternative scratch options available.

Our velvet sofas have remained intact and we have 5 cats.

The DFS French Connection Zinc range are cat claw proof. Mine used it as a scratching post and no marks ever.

Technically, it's a "not our cat"... but the cat that comes and sleeps on our sofa has never scratched ours- it's an old habitat sofa, covered in what I think is called alcantara, basically synthetic suede. There's really nowhere a cat could get their claws in.
She has almost destroyed our front gate post though!

My cat loves to scratch our very expensive velvet sofa 😩. I bought some adhesive panels from amazon to try to discourage him which definitely work, but kind of defeats the purpose of having a lovely sofa!

We have velvet and they don't scratch it at all. They ARE scratchers so it's not a coincidence. They've wrecked the carpet

A sofa made out of iron would do the job. I cover all mine in thick throws and only take them off if I have guests.
