Adoption timelines

If you've adopted recently, how long did the process take? We sent in an application to a local rehoming charity a month ago, and we haven't even had an acknowledgement of it yet. I'm aware the charity is entirely staffed by volunteers and it's been an extremely busy/generally difficult time, but I'm wondering if I'd be unreasonable to call them to enquire?

They're the only one of our the rehoming charities close to us (both local and national) that routinely rehomes kittens, which is why I wanted to use them.

And on that note - is it generally harder to adopt kittens? Practically all of the centres we've looked at are very reluctant to rehome adult cats to homes with children under 11, but more open to doing so with kittens which is why I've been looking at that.

It's taken me two years to feel ready for another cat after QuantumCat died, and now I'm there, I just want to get on with it Grin

I think it depends where you go.

Cats protection I found they went really quickly (and as you say not many that can actually be homes with children). They were also not very good at getting back to me about enquiries.

A smaller local rejoining centre I enquired about a pair of black kittens on the Monday, viewed them on Wednesday and we brought them home Sunday!

Are you in London? I'm with Celia Hammonds Canning Town. We have loads of cats, and quite a few not yet on the website. Feel free to private message.

Thanks, @thecatneuterer - I've sent you a PM.

Curse you, @OneCuppaChar - I've been looking at UAE adoptions, and they are SO adorable! Which rescue did you use?

They are amazing cats, really intelligent and beautiful as well. We used Homes in the uk for Desert Paws.... contact through Facebook.

I adopted my cat (then 5 month old kitten) in 2019. Had adopted from the local charity in the past. Kitten is enquired about had been adopted so they offered me a kitten who'd been so shy at the rehoming, no one had seen what she looked like so wasn't taken. They didn't have photos but we knew we were the right family for this shy little one. Within 36 hours of agreeing, she was home with us and although is still timid with others, she's very much the boss of the house Grin

I specifically requested a black female, 5 years old, and she was delivered to me 4 days later. They basically did a house visit at that point.

I thought I would come back and update, after getting so many helpful replies.

DH was extremely firm with me that we needed to wait until the end of the month to see if we could get any response from our local rescues, but after that point, we could cast our next wider.

Then I showed him a video of a gorgeous pair of brothers from the UAE rescue that @OneCuppaChar mentioned above cuddling up to each other, and to cut a long story short, they arrive next monthGrin.

Thank you to everyone for being so helpful, and especially @thecatneuterer for taking the time to PM.

I am bubbling with excitement about having cats back in my life, and counting down to Caturday!

Wonderful news! They will fill your home with joy and you are rescuing them from a terrible life on the streets. There are a couple of groups on Facebook too for people who have adopted Arabian Mau's, good for advice if needed. The rescuers are super helpful though as well. It's very exciting when they arrive ☺ .

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 18/01/2022 15:25

We live close enough to Heathrow to go and collect them ourselves - I can't wait!

That's brilliant. The what's app was good fun too so make sure they add you once the flight leaves. Pm me if you want to chat. My naughty mau has just broken into a packet of spinach (after an excellent supper) and is now hiding! 😜
