Stray cat - would like to keep

Over the summer, a sweet little cat started to appear on our shed roof. Always too timid to be approached though.

In November, our neighbour remarked that it was a stray. In December I went in our shed and discovered it must be living in there - it had made a little bed from an old patio chair cushion, covered in its fur.

I built it a little den and put an igloo style cat bed inside and have started to leave out food and milk/water. She/he loves it there and looking much healthier already. She now comes in the house and is so gentle with the kids. We have no other pets and would really like to keep her.

I have checked with neighbours and our local WhatsApp group but no takers. Also checked the local missing cats Facebook page for a match, but am wary to post on there in case someone unsavoury claims her.

The vet has said to bring her in next week (now early Jan) to check for a microchip. This is where I'm curious, does anyone have experience of taking in a cat who turns out to have long lost owners, and if so were they ok with you keeping it and signing over details?

We're really quite taken with her!

Thanks everyone! I feel I can really embrace being cat-owned now I know everyone is happy with the situation. She is such a lovely natured cat.

@Fluffycloudland77 her real name was after the tree of the weeping kind 😉 Her new surname.

@thecatneuterer fortunately yes! I need to check her boosters are up to date but she is registered with the vet I took her to.

Home sweet home

@JoanOgden

This is a lovely thread. It has everything: a cute cat, lovely OP, suspense, accidental misgendering and a happy ending Grin
😂 It's nice to have somewhere that cat chronicles are appreciated!

Ah what a happy ending!! When your dcat goes missing it is the not knowing!! Bet the owner knows their dcat is happiest with you. And that's all that matters..Congratulations op..

VelvetKitty · 05/01/2022 19:31

Oh what a lovely ending. This has really brightened my day!

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/01/2022 19:34

Her original owner was very generous doing that but it seems dusty is not one for three kids, two dogs and two more cats. She might have wandered off again and not been so lucky.

Mia184 · 05/01/2022 19:57

What a wonderful story! She looks so happy in the last picture. I‘m glad that her previous owners saw that she was unhappy with them and contacted you.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/01/2022 20:01

What, her old first name is your surname? That was an omen and a half!

Glad she's home with you, and that her old owners did what was best for the cat.

KittensTeaAndCake · 05/01/2022 21:05

Awww just caught up with this and now might have something in my eye, what a happy ending.
So glad the original slave owner handed her over to you. I've had a couple of cats go missing over the years and I'd be so happy knowing they were in a loving home. The not knowing is the worst feeling ever Sad

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2022 21:09

I just told DP how this thread ended up and we are both so delighted for you!

Journeynotdestination · 05/01/2022 21:29

I’m officially in love with Dusty! 😻

Loved reading this thread, it’s made me all warm & fluffy inside.

Mistressofnone · 05/01/2022 22:14

❤️ All of your comments have really made me smile! I'm loving this portion of mumsnet so much.

@TheSpottedZebra I worded that badly, we are going to use her old name as a second name - her showbiz name if you will Grin we were originally calling her Dusty Springfield!

@JellyfishandShells oh dear it's so easy to get carried away isn't it! I was trying to err on the side of caution but now I will be buying little personalised bowls and a slip mat. Thing is they would have had to take their cat to the vet at some point and it would have been chip checked I expect!

Don’t forget to get the chip info changed to your contact details OP.

TheMadGardener · 06/01/2022 01:03

She looks so happy in that last photo! Aw!

JulieGoods · 06/01/2022 08:28

Aahh I've been keeping an eye for updates. And didn't even flip the thread this morning as didn't want any spoilers.

What a perfect update. You know her history, her previous family can have peace that she's safe and happy, and you end up with a beautiful pet to love.

Please keep the photos coming she's just beautiful and clearly so happy with you.

awesomekilick · 06/01/2022 10:17

Yaaaayyy!! Wonderful. That last photo, well she's the epitome of a happy cat.

PurpleVivo · 07/01/2022 00:52

Yay! I’m so pleased she has found you and that the owner was sensible enough to realise their home wasn’t right for her. Such a lovely thread 😍

CrikeyPeg · 07/01/2022 02:24

A lovely update!! Dusty looks so settled in that last pic.

Mistressofnone · 07/01/2022 20:19

You've all got me through the last week and the worry about possible outcomes! Thank you all for following. You're right it feels so much better knowing her history and that the previous owners have closure. I have sent them some pictures.

I can't believe how much more homely a house can feel with a cat in it!

Just the two of us today while I worked from home.

Well that dcat was obviously meant to be yours. It matches your soft furnishings just purrfectly!
Smile

Mia184 · 07/01/2022 20:31

She already feels very much at home Smile

EmmaC78 · 07/01/2022 20:36

She is lovely. You won't regret it, cats make brilliant pets. I agree with the lick-e-lix recommendation. My cat loves them.

ofwarren · 07/01/2022 20:48

Aww, she's gorgeous
Wonderful thread

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/01/2022 21:15

She’s owning that sofa isn’t she? At least she’s not living in a shed anymore fending for herself. She’s a resourceful little girl.

awesomekilick · 07/01/2022 21:31

Clever girl. You and the cat both. You found each other :)

TheMadGardener · 08/01/2022 01:01
