Settling in a new kitten

We're picking up our new kitten soon, we haven't had a kitten in the house for 12 years & I can't remember what we did in those first few weeks so I'd like some advise & do's & dont's please.

I read about keeping them in 1 room for a few days to get them used to their new home, does this mean keeping their food / water and litter tray in that 1 room or should I keep those where they'll permanently be?

We were going to put the litter tray at the top of the stairs, it'll give them privacy and will be harder for my DC to get near it but will this be too far for the kitten to get to it?

Should I bring him up with us at night or leave him downstairs? He'll have the run of the house but I'm worried he won't know his way around for the first few days.

Sorry for the long post & thank you in advance for any help given Smile

I've always done the one room thing with everything in there. The kitten/cat lets you know when they want out, which might be within a day or it may take longer. Once kitten/cat is secure and comfortable in the house put water/food and litter where you want them to be.

Thank you @Yarnivore

Did you leave them down there at night too?

It really depends on your house layout and what you want to do long term. As long as they have all they need in whatever space you choose then they'll be fine.

Thanks again @Yarnivore. I'll have a think over the next few days.
