Black stuff in kitten's nostrils

My kitten is 4 months old. Ever since I've had him, he gets black "snot" on the edge of both his nostrils. He doesn't mind me gently scratching it out with my fingernail! I have to do this moreorless every day as it comes back. It's kind of crusty. He hasn't ever been outside (yet). Nor is he unwell
Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

No idea but my cat has it too.

Is he ginger and does he have a pink nose? My boy cat has it and I'm not sure if I just notice it more on him because his nose is pink while his sisters is black. My old cats nose was also black so wouldn't have noticed it on her. I also just scrape it away and he doesn't mind. I think they're just bogies!

Yes he's ginger with a pink nose! But I have another ginger&white with a pink nose but he doesn't have the snot. There again, maybe he's just better at cleaning his nostrils!

that's where Marmite comes from....cat bogies.

Its just fluff\food\dirt that gets stuck as he goes about his day! I have a 6 month old kitten and 2 yr old cat and take great pleasure in picking out their nose-fluff every couple of days (and also the gunk from inside the corners of their eyes)

GiveMeStrength2day · 19/12/2021 21:45

Sounds pretty normal then. I've had LOTS of cats over the years and don't remember any regular production of crusty snot!

@terriblyangryattimes - yes to the eye gunk! DD and I call it eye gubbins

We had a white cat that had it. None of our other cats have ever had it though.

@terriblyangryattimes I love picking off the eye snot that my Persian gets. It's so satisfying.

PureBlackVoid · 20/12/2021 06:10

My tortie cat has it but my other 2 don’t. I try to wipe it but daren’t pick it incase it hurts her Blush

Haribo has an eye wipe every morning whilst he sits on the laundry box watching me on the toilet.

There’s a useful-thorough explanation here about the potential causes of cat snot of a murky hue - are any of his favourite things to snoofle at/snuggle into dark-coloured? Getting his wee nose linty is - as others have said - bound to be it (but there aren’t articles that only talk about that option). And have you had much chance to see how good he is at washing his face? If he just wafts the occasional paw, that won’t help if he needs a proper clean.

It is vanishingly rare for me to need to degunk my black cat’s eyes; blond cat, however, I’m still (they’ll be 10 in April) endlessly removing sleep-streaks that look horrifyingly like scabs. It’s only him that ever needs his nose cleaning, too, though that’s much less usual.
