Getting a new kitten just before Xmas

After losing our beloved cat a couple of months ago. I decided to just have a wee look at our local cat rescue, just out of curiosity... and of course they have the most adorable kittens desperately needing homes.

How could I say no?

We would probably be taking her home very close to Christmas and I'm worried about forgetting to get something essential only to have the shops closed.

I have my previous adult cats litter tray, would a 12 week kitten need a smaller one?

What kitten food would you recommend?

And what are good toys. My previous cat was an adult rescue to it's a long time since I have looked after a kitten!

Any tips would be appreciated Smile

Ps sorry for no pics yet.

Oh I’m so pleased for you. We got two kittens a few years ago. They did keep each other occupied!
Don’t expect Christmas decorations to survive. Grin

lucky you, and lucky them.
Ginger kittens/ cats are adorable, usually very loving and affectionate.
My big ginger lump is on my lap as we speak, he is 8 yrs old and l had him and his brother from kittens. They get on really well, groom and play with one another, never get nasty. They have brought so much joy to our lives.

I can vouch for this, the most loving of all cats I've ever had were the ginger brothers I got as kittens.

I'd love a ginger kitten for Christmas. Not sure the current pair (now 8 and 10) would be as happy but I'm willing to try. Wink

Just a wee update from our now two cat household.

Kittens are getting along great, really healthy and eating well.

They are so adorable and cuddly, but I do have one question for people more experienced with kittens.

When do they stop having their claws out for everything?
We have been consistent with a "no or "ow" noise everytime they claw or bite and we have seen huge improvements, especially with biting, they don't do it all now.

Clawing is an issue when they try to crawl onto us, over us, up our trouser legs etc, or when they are in a play mood. I always re-direct to toys and I think most of the scratches are unintentional but my poor hands and arms are littered with tiny scratches. My previous adult cats always had their claws sheathed if they were walking over us or jumping around us. I'm not quite sure how to encourage the kittens to sheathe their claws more, or is this just something they get better at over time. My poor hands look like I have dragged them through a thorn bush. None of the scratches are deep but their claws are so very sharp the lightest touch is painful.

Also how to get them to use the scratching post and not the couch, carpet, rug, bed... my jeans.. you get the idea! Pristine fancy scratching post is being totally ignored, typically!

Also my DH usually ends up watching Telly at night with both kittens snuggled up on his lap or chest. When I raise my eyebrows at He Who Did Not Want Two Cats... I get a really smug look as he is their person of choice.

Annoying and smug (but very cute).
