New kitten - litter training

Hi :)
We bought a new kitten home today and It's been so long since I last had one that I have no idea what I'm doing Blush
He's currently fast asleep in my coat..that I'm wearing Grin

I've repeatedly put him in the litter tray as he looks like he needs to go but he hasn't been since he got here 3 hours ago. My only vague memory is my first kitten going pretty regularly . He's more interested in playing with the dog who's completely bemused at the house intruder but willing to entertain.

Do I just keep placing Dkitten on the tray or leave him to it?

Gorgeous kitty!

They often don't eat, go to the toilet or chill easily when they first get home! He looks relaxed which is great.

They usually hide somewhere and we made the mistake of trying to get ours out. Now we realise that they did it to feel safe.
I've recently got a puppy & became overwhelmed with the amount of conflicting advice of how it should be fed, toilet trained, behaviourally trained, walked, etc... A few months on I wish I went with my gut instincts more.

Sounds like you're doing all of the right things!

Also does the litter tray have a lid? We found ours used it more that way.

MrsFin · 12/12/2021 19:36

Did its mum toilet train it?

Aww so cute look at those ears!
As long as he knows where it is, my two kittens used to only go at night for a few days

ItsSnowJokes · 12/12/2021 20:17

Are you using the same litter that he was used to? We made that mistake with one of our kittens years ago and when we moved to the same litter she went straight for it.

It's a different litter l, we weren't told what they used so got aldi own for now. He found his litter tray and has managed to go twice now and eaten 1/4 pouch of wet food. He's part siamese and very vocal if I leave the room so currently sat with him in my coat..again Grin.

Which litter would you recommend that's low dust? The aldi one is really dusty so I want to change it ASAP. I have paper pellets that we use for hedgehogs but they tend to smell quickly.
