My cat is a fussy eater

Hello fellow cat slaves. I'm hoping you'll be able to give me a bit of advice.

My cat has always been a bit fussy with wet food. In her 3 years of life I've learned she prefers gravy to jelly but in broth is best and she generally prefers fish over meat Hmm As long as I switched up the brand regularly she was content. However, in the last year or so it's become increasingly difficult to get a wet food that she enjoys.

She eats biscuits happily throughout the day but views them as more of a snack. She cries for wet food but everything I'm putting down to her she either sniffs and turns her nose up in disgust or will have a few bites but won't finish it. I think I've spoiled her because the only food she consistently eats with enthusiasm now is the type that has the little prawns in it. But they are so expensive, if I bought them all the time I'd be spending more on cat food than on my own groceries!

Should I remove the dry food and let her get hungry enough that she'll eat whatever I put down? Or am I a fool for even thinking that she won't defiantly starve herself to death rather than eat a cheap pouch which is clearly beneath her and her refined palate? Maybe I would be better to just give her dry food as her main meal and the expensive food as a treat a few times a week? Hydration isn't an issue, she drinks plenty of water because after I caught her sipping out of my glass I gave her a designated mug that I fill up every day and leave on the bedside table. She happily laps that up but of course refuses water out of her own bowl. Writing that out it dawned on me that perhaps I am the true designated mug in our home ConfusedGrin

Any wisdom would be much appreciated!!

Have you tried mixing some dry into wet food?

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2021 13:30

Which biscuits is she on?

Orangecrisp · 13/12/2021 13:33

My cat is the same in that he only eats gravy and only meat not fish, which really restricts what’s available. We are now feeding him good quality dry food which he seems to like. He has James Wellbeloved which fills him up. He also will only drink from cereal bowls placed on window sills Grin

My cats only eat sheba or perle gourmet.

It's expensive.

I had a similar issue with our rescue. I got rid of all purina/Felix products and his appetite slowly returned.

This used to happen with my cat, bless his soul. I would then give him some sliced ham or chicken to ‘recalibrate’ his taste buds and then he would be fine after a day on that. My latest rescue has her water bowl refreshed twice a day but still prefers to drink from my DH’s glass on the bedside table. 😆
