Finding a home for a stray cat, any advice?

I'm hoping for some help or advice on finding a home for a very determined little cat who is trying to move in with us! For several reasons we can't keep him although we're feeding him and providing shelter. We're in Spain, and cats here can have a very hard time so to ensure a loving lap to purr on I'm trying to rehome in the UK. Clearly I'd help with paperwork and transport. I've googled but haven't had much luck with progress. Any ideas, please? He's a sweetie, affectionate and quite chatty. Picture for attention!!

Bumping

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2021 21:41

He's lovely.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 10/12/2021 21:45

Are you sure he can't be an outdoor dcat with your surname??

EmpressCixi · 10/12/2021 21:49

I think you choices are keep him as an outdoor cat or find a way to home him locally. I think it is a bad idea to ship him alone and afraid from Spain to U.K. away from his territory and cat friends.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 10/12/2021 21:53

An outdoor dcat in Spain to UK would surely not be in his best interests?

Want2beme · 10/12/2021 23:07

He looks so sweet.

Does your vet have any contacts for
overseas rescues? Is there a local cat rescue organisation that you can speak to?
Contact these organisations for advice?

I volunteered at a dog rescue when I lived in Spain and they often sent animals to the UK and Germany for adoption. I brought my cat back from Spain. Is there a local rescue centre near you who can advise you?

icedcoffees · 11/12/2021 08:57

I really wouldn't put him through transport to the UK.

Can you not keep him as an outdoor cat with a shelter in the garden for him?

Hecho · 11/12/2021 15:22

Thanks for all the replies. Ideally I would keep him as an outdoor cat. But he doesn't get on with our male cat, and next year we will be moving to somewhere with no outside space with our two rescue cats and rescue dog. One more in the mix would be too difficult. Unfortunately rehoming cats in Spain is almost impossible. Unwanted kittens and puppies are regularly left out in the countryside or dropped into the communal rubbish bins/skips; poisoned meat is another common solution. So although it's less than ideal to move him away, it will ensure he survives, and hopefully thrives. If I leave him here he won't.

Want2beme thanks for the good advice. I've asked local friends and tried all our local centres, who are full. I have some limited experience rehoming dogs in the UK and Holland so am a bit familiar with the process, I can ask for help from our vet to sort out the paperwork and have been recommended experienced animal transporters. The problem is finding an adult cat a new home, when it's hard for people to meet him. He is an absolute sweetie, our guess is he was dumped once he grew too big to be cute. He loves people! While we're here he has food and a warm bed inside, but I'm worried for his future. BTW it's great to hear of your volunteer work here, and taking your cat with you, so many animals need help : (

Did you have any luck finding a solution for the kitty? I was just wondering if there's any facebook group that is involved in helping take cats to the UK? Something along the lines of adoptions by people from the UK who are there on holiday and want to rescue a cat at the same time. Probably wishful thinking on my part, but I know there are dog rescues that rehome to people who live overseas and they travel there to collect the dog and have a holiday at the same time.

Not sure if they can help, but you never knowSmile

If you're near Gibraltar, there's a cat welfare organisation there you could ask for advice.

Hecho · 24/12/2021 06:53

Thanks Want2beme, lovely idea and one I hadn't heard of! And NotPaidEnough, I haven't checked the Gibraltar group yet ..... We have had some developments though. The little guy is still with us, and in the new year will hopefully be meeting an English couple that live locally. They love cats, they are retired so have time for him, they have been delighted with the videos and photos we've sent (he's a charmer!), and are interested in taking him for a trial. We're waiting until January when things are a little quieter for him to head over. I'll let you know what happens. It's be lovely to have a little Christmas miracle : )

Paws crossed that it goes well.

NotPaidEnough · 24/12/2021 13:33

That sounds promising, best of luck to the little guy.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 24/12/2021 14:42

What a beautiful darling, I already have too many cats.

Want2beme · 24/12/2021 16:52

Let's hope they love him too pieces, as you do. How could they not 😻

Hecho · 18/01/2022 10:10

Hello! I just wanted to update those who have taken an interest in the Spanish stray .... the little cat we've been trying to rehome is moving to his new sofa today. He is to be called Peter by his new people, and will be treated like a prince! I just hope he recognises how lucky he is and behaves himself!! Thanks for all your input, it's heartening to know you're all out there x
