Keeping cone on

Hi, first time cat mum. Male kitten was neutered today and he’s home and fine but we cannot keep the cone on. He’s licking his bits and I literally put it on, he slides it off. I called the vets but they were less than helpful ‘he needs to wear it’ yeah I get that but there must be some tricks or something???

Neither of mine had a collar after neutering. I'm not sure they need it unless they did a really complex surgery

Our vet didn’t even give our male cat a cone, they said it wasn’t necessary as it’s such a tiny slit! I’ve heard of people going out and buying baby grows to wrestle their pets into when they won’t keep a cone on or stop licking after an op -would that be worth a go for a couple of days?

I had to take the cone off our female cat as it was too traumatic for her. She just stayed backed in a corner and didn’t eat or drink. As soon as I took it off she went straight to her bowl.

Is he due pain relief?

KittenCatcher · 22/11/2021 18:51

The more you put it on the more he will try and take it off. You could try a babygro or a soft collar if the vet thinks its necessary but it's a struggle. Is he weeing ok.

Presumably the collar is already on its smallest setting? I cut some old clothes into long thin (very soft) rags to tie the collar on -- you are tying it on, right?

Dontrainonmyparade · 22/11/2021 22:31

I’ve tried the most intricate tying imaginable. He gets the bloody thing off again. Sad

Just leave it off then

Plump82 · 23/11/2021 14:34

I didn't get a cone for either of mine. The vet said they didn't even give them out. My boy also didn't even get pain relief but to be honest you would have never known he had just be neutered. He's as daft as brush and bounced right back!

Couldn't keep a cone on mine either - vet suggested we get a medical t-shirt instead. She got trapped inside that! So gave up and after a bit of initial interest in the wound area she wasn't bothered by it.

Dontrainonmyparade · 23/11/2021 15:23

Have left it off, he’s mostly left the area alone and just slept for most of today. He’s going to be home alone tomorrow as we are all working but hopefully will be fine. I think I’d be more worried leaving him if he had kept the cone on to be honest.

Mine didn’t get a cone when his balls came off and he was fine. A little bit of exploratory licking then he just left it alone and looked slightly wistful for a day or two…
