Anyone have Persians? What is their lifespan?

Hi,
I have two Persians, they are my babies and and I’ve had them since kittens. They will be 14 next month and I’m starting to think I need to prepare myself for when the inevitable happens in the next five years or so 😞. Does anyone have any experience as to whether they live as long as moggies? Internet searches imply the average life span of a Persian is only 14 years 😞

One of mine died from heart disease at 8. Her sister is now 11. However mine were abused breeding queens. I understand they don't always live as long as moggies. But I knew a few who did live to 18-19. I've had no issues so far with my third Persian who wasn't from a bad background.

Ps op. Pictures are required!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2021 12:19

If they don't have underlying health issues. I can't see why they can't live as long as moggies. Unfortunately they are just more prone to problems.

Thanks for your reply Toddlerteaplease and apologies for taking so long to respond. Good to hear I may well have mine with me for a good few years then 🙂

@Catmummy12345 magic and cheddar want to see their cousins!

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/11/2021 20:34

I think my mum got one of ours to 17 but she had a grim determination to outlive our other cats.

Catmummy12345 · 24/11/2021 12:22

Here are my two 🙂

I had a Persian years ago and he lived to be 16 and then kidney failure set in which I understand is very very common in the breed. They are beautiful cats.

GerardWay123 · 24/11/2021 12:43

I probably shouldn't be posting on a cat thread, but I have a 14 year old labrador. I know I will have to cope when the day comes but I will just want to run away.
Love & hugs. X

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2021 12:53

They are gorgeous OP. Love that you have a tree in your bedroom. Cheddar would take great delight in leaping on to me in the middle of the night if I had one there!

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2021 12:53

Not that Persians did much leaping!

Sportsnight · 24/11/2021 14:02

So beautiful 😍 My mum’s Persian rescue girl died earlier this year at about 17 (also an ex-breeding cat so we weren’t sure exactly how old she was, but mum had her for 14 years herself and we were told she was “about 3”)

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2021 17:36

I was told mine were 'about 5' I do wonder if they were older though.

Catmummy12345 · 24/11/2021 18:07

Hopefully a few more years from my two then 🙂 They’ve had very easy lives to be honest! We got them from a breeder at 14 weeks and they came with documentation covering full family trees, birth certificates and pkd negative test certificates for both parents!!

Presumably they were also screened for heart disease. Nice to know there are some reputable breeders out there. I dread to think, how many of Maia's kittens also have heart disease.

Catmummy12345 · 24/11/2021 22:16

I don’t think they were screened for heart disease no 😬 Is it something to look out for in Persians?

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2021 23:08

Yes. It's very common unfortunately. I thought screening was compulsory if they are official registered breeders. They should never be bred from
If they have it as it's genetic.

Catmummy12345 · 25/11/2021 13:03

Maybe it wasn’t compulsory to screen for heart disease when I got mine 14 years a go…
The vet did say she detected a very slight heart murmur the last check up for one of mine, but said it was so minor that nothing to worry about yet. Best keep an eye on that then.

Mine had a grade 4 heart murmur, but no one actually told me that. I found out by accident. Had I known, I'd have had her seen earlier. We had nine months from diagnosis to her kidneys packing up. But they were good months and she was never unwell. So no point in being annoyed with vets for not telling me.
