Brother & sister - vets & first time separated

I may be being far too precious-first-kittens 🤣 but just wondering.... sibling boy and girl kittens, nearly 5 months, boy cat can be castrated this month, they will do girl cat separately in Dec/Jan.
So when boy kitten goes in, this will be the first time they've been separated and also he'll come back smelling 'of vet'...
Are there any potential issues with reuniting them, like girl kitten not accepting him back because of the vet smell?

They might be a little bit off with each other when he gets back from the vet, but I don't think that'll last, not in my experience. I took my little foster cat to the vet yesterday to be neutered, and he was subjected to a lot of sniffing by the other lodgers, who he gets on well with, when he arrived back, but they were back to normal in no time. Your boy will probably be a bit wobbly and maybe a bit cranky, but they'll work it out.

So cute!!

Ours were off. The girl much more bothered than the boy about smells. She never got any better. She would reject him for 24 hours and then suddenly get over it and it would all be normal again. If we just took her to the vets, he wouldn't be bothered. So when they both got eye infections, in she went while he got to snooze at home Grin

We tried feliway, getting them a treat to share (she just snarled between mouthfuls) and rubbing his scent on a cloth for her to sit with and nothing worked. Don't worry, leave them to it and they'll get over it soon enough :)

What's the reason for leaving girl cat till later? My boy and girl got done at the same time so we never had this issue but girl cat has been to the vets a couple of times since. Boy cat was apparently looking for her when we were away but they were both totally fine when she got home

I had an old tom cat & 2 kittens.
The old tom didn't perceive the kittens any differently when they came back from being spayed. He accepted them as well as he had before.

I believe you might be overthinking this.

I had my 2 done at the same time too so arrived and left the vet together. However, the little girl got an infection and had to have an overnight stay at the vet a week later. Boy kitten was totally normal with her when she got home.

Thanks all! Good info and some tips 👍

@Plump82 I'm not sure to be honest, I asked about them doing them at same time and they just said they'd do boy cat by end of month as he's defo ready at 5 months and it makes sense to do the male sooner- then said something and they'd do girl cat Dec/Jan.... I may email and check, I wasn't fully listening as girl-cat was a bit nervous and trying to do a runner!

@YeOldeTrout I am definitely over thinking 🤣 but just in a 'hope for best, plan for worst' which is just how I am 😊

Can't quite tell from the pic but is she small ? My vet said they had to reach 2kg before they would neuter. Could it be that the boy has reached that and she hasn't yet. Also she will need to be checked on days 3 and 10 after surgery so they prob would do close to Christmas ?

Suzysuz · 17/11/2021 22:03

Thanks @Worriesandwobbles She's over 2kg now as part of the check today was to check her weight. Ah I hadn't thought of opening times and check ups...
