Spot-on for ear mites?

Which spot-on is best for ear mites, and can I get it OTC?

None of the OTC products kill ear mites. I rarely see ear mites now so would suggest a vet checks to make sure there are mites present and not an ear infection.

I'm pretty sure it's ear mites. He is well and not distressed, just scratches his ear and shakes his head. When we adopted dcat 6m ago we were told he had just had a week's treatment for ear mites, and were given the rest of the bottle. He started scratching his right ear within a few weeks, but we have never been able to get the ear drops into his ears. We also cannot get him into the carrier to take him to the vet, so I'd rather avoid that stress (for both of us!) until he actually has to go to the vet - which won't be for another 6m, all being well.

I use a flea spray for ear mites. A skoosh of it works.

Advocate works against mites. I get it from the vet. Costs about the same as buying the decent OTC stuff.
