What's wrong with my cat?

There's something wrong with my cat. Maybe you can help me?

He's got a limp. He's been to the vet. Legs manipulated, X-rays taken. Overnight stay. Good thorough examination.

He stopped limping whilst at the vet.

Back home and he's limping again. I was with him and he was sitting down, he turned round to walk away...and fell over! On the side he's limping on.

I'm so worried about him.

He's 3 years old, fully up to date with his vaccinations, due flea, tick and worming. Insured and because of his frequent visits to the vet we also have a pet plan for him.

He's been in a few fights recently and needed antibiotics.

Last October (30th) he was hit by a car and needed a hip op (removed) but due to recent X-rays we know that's healed exceptionally well.

He's limping worse than when he had the op!

Any ideas?

He's taking metacam right now until Wednesday (once a day) and due back for a check up on Thursday.

It can't be anything obvious or common.
I hope it feels better soon.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2021 18:14

Can you video the limp?
Could it be a reaction to something in the home? Air fresheners etc?

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 18:18

Nothings changed at home and we don't use air fresheners or things like that.

Thanks for thinking though. I don't know if I can share videos can I?

I was just thinking you could show the vet.

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 18:57

Ah! Thanks @Wolfiefan I did indeed show the vet.

I've just noticed (and remembered) that the leg he's limping on spasms sometimes. He's on my lap right now and it just happened.

Pinching a nerve? He’s a stunning boy. Hope he’s better soon.

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 19:28

Ah, words a cat mum loves to read. He IS a stunning boy.

The eyes! And he looks like he’s pouting in that pic! I’m betting he knows he’s stunning too! Grin

We spent £600 investigating a "limp" at the vets.
Turned out my cat just wanted more attention 🙄😂

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 20:28

He's added another limp! Well he had a front limp and a back limp at the start of the week, spent time at the vets, all appeared good

Came home. No limp, then the back limp appeared and now the front limp has appeared. He doesn't want to put weight down on his front right paw.

He's been x-rayed FGS. There can't be anything wrong?

He's an absolutely gorgeous boy. I love him so much.

Ok - thinking a bit outside the box but could it be neurological? Especially if it keeps giving way and going into spasm. Is it all on one side? Any other neuro symptoms?

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 21:57

All on one side. The limping is getting worse. His right side almost gave way a minute ago at the back.

I've put lots of toys out and sprayed his kicker with cat nip. He's interested, just a bit lethargic.

I can just tell he's not himself. But he was looked over and spent the night at the vet. They said there was no physical signs as to why he'd be limping.

He's had a weight appropriate dose of metacam this morning can he have more tonight?

He's making biscuits in his bed now.

His sister keeps hissing at him. And looking at him. She knows something is up.

Definitely try and get a video for the vet
And write down days/times/symptoms

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 22:12

I've called the vet. I'm taking him in tomorrow at 11:00.

He's not right.

I can't give him anymore metacam as he had some this morning.

Do you think he's in pain, or just distressed that he can't walk properly?
The fact that it's all on one side would support a neuro issue (a bit extreme but stroke / brain tumour in a human could cause these symptoms on one side of the body so don't see why it couldn't be a possibility for a cat).

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 22:14

You know when they're not
I went to the vet with
"I touched his shoulder and he looked at me funny" (giant abscess)
"He didn't come to the door to greet me" (triaditis)
My vet is quite used to me saying he's just not right and they definitely listen

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 22:27

I think he's in a bit of pain. His pupils are massive. He's meowing a little bit sometimes when touched and all of a sudden he'll be sitting there and meow, even if no one is touching him.

He's putting weight on his paws now so vet thinks he can't be in too much pain.

Anyway he's asleep now.

Watching with interest. My cat has similar symptoms. It's been going on for a few weeks now. Metacarpal makes no difference. I think it's neurological.

Nemorth · 29/10/2021 22:43

He's sleeping in one of his favourite positions, he's relaxed and happy when like this

I hope your cat is ok.

Had another good exam at the vet. He couldn't find anything to worry about. Acknowledged that cat seems sore on three legs (only left fore leg is ok).

Has prescribed lots of rest and to continue with the metacam.

Gibbs was really pissed at the vet, hissing etc. He was is a fight Sunday night and there's a wound on his left shoulder (small, wound, properly treated). So thinks that leg is sore because of that. His hind legs are sore in part due to the year old femoral head thing and maybe from jumping, falling or running away from the fight when he got the wound.

He had antibiotics (a jag) on Monday which will last for 2 weeks.

He has a follow up appointment on Thursday and if he gets worse he'll need to be sedated again and checked over. Again.

He's making me go grey.

Wolfiefan · 30/10/2021 14:24

Here’s hoping the painkillers and rest sort it.

AppleButter · 30/10/2021 15:34

Hopefully it is just soreness from the fight, but if it continues you can ask to have his nerves and b-vitamins checked. Perhaps a nerve injury.
He isn’t going round in circles is he? Or had any fits?

KeyLimePies · 03/11/2021 07:39

You don’t have lilies in the house or garden do you? My cat had a limp years ago and it was caused by lily pollen which I didn’t know was poisonous to cats at the time.

I hope he gets better soon.
