My dear old boy was 20. An amazing age. He had been struggling for the past few weeks but was eating and drinking really well. But his sight and hearing were poor. He had diabetes and an awful cough that could've been fluid on his lung Sad. We were taking it week by week and then day by day. I left it too late. He had his tea, got comfy by the fire and then he got up and wobbled all over. His mobility was gone and his little face was so distressed. So we rang the emergency vet and it was all over... so quick and ultimately peaceful.
It's sad to think he ate his tea and wanted to settle in for the night and now he's gone. The vet said he had a long life and was more than ready. I do know that. But it's sad 💙

Ah so sorry for your loss op.. 20, wow!! Are you happy to share a photo? We lost one of our db's last year. He was only 8. Gone far too soon.
Glad your vet was available.. Poor boy.

Thank you both.
Oh brolly 8 seems so young. How sad.
We paid a lot for the emergency vet call out but it was much needed.

Oh bless him what a beautiful boy he was. So sorry for your loss. Rest in peace dear puss. Thanks

Brollywasntneededafterall · 16/10/2021 22:13

What a beauty op... We got a dkitten as our remaining boy was so sad...
Plenty of rescues around to fill gaps when needed.....
We had our boy cremated and his ashes are under a pot in the garden.

MyrealnameisBernard · 16/10/2021 22:14

Oh my word @Chosennone I'm so sorry. This was me a few weeks ago. It hurts so much. I still miss her a lot even though she was ready and had a good life at 19.5.
Sending love

Warmduscher · 16/10/2021 22:15

It’s so much better that the vet came to you than having to take him somewhere unfamiliar when he was struggling,

Both my last two cats were pts at home. It did cost more but I wouldn’t have taken them into the surgery as it would have been too stressful for them.

Sending Flowers OP. You did the kindest thing you could for your beautiful boy.

mineofuselessinformation · 16/10/2021 22:18

You didn't leave it too late - you made the call when you knew it was time, @Chosennone.
That's a kind thing to do for your old boy.
I had to do it too, so I feel for you.
It's never easy to let a much-loved pet go, but at least you can make that decision for them. And you did, in kindness and love for him. Sending you un-Mumsnetty hugs.

Such a beautiful boy, what a loving face ❤

I'm so sorry, op, I know how heartbreaking it is Flowers

I’m so sorry. He obviously had the best life. Making the call to have the vet let him go at home was the best decision. Flowers sounds weird but I’m getting to terms that my Beast dropped dead without warning during lockdown at only 8 years old and he’s buried in the the garden. I wish I could have got him to 20! Xx

So sorry to hear your news. What a gorgeous boy. You gave him an amazing life and did the right thing for him when it counted Flowers

Our boy is 19 and we lost his brother when he was 8 through stomach cancer @Brollywasntneededafterall It was so hard as he was such a vibrant ginger tom and he was a shadow of himself.
