Cat escaped when being rehomed

My MIL got a rescue cat from a charity on Tuesday. Cat is 12 and had been on a drive of 40 miles to get to her house. It belonged to an elderly lady and had not bee outdoors ever.
The cat had been in MILs house for 2 hours, was very stressed and managed to escape through small open window. She has not been seen since. MIL lives in a tiny village in middle of countryside surrounded by hedgerows and woodland. Lots of searching has been done but no sign of cat who must have been very stressed and now just be terrified. We have tried everything to find her but would be grateful for advice please. Thank you.

The poor cat! Has she contacted the charity to inform them? Cats have been know to walk miles upon miles to get back home. (2,000 for one cat!)

Did she come with a blanket or bed? Had she used the litter tray?
Put her used litter tray outside or her bed/blanket outside so she has familiar scent. Contact a local vet to see if they have a trap and set it up with food in in the hope of capturing her.

Has MIL put photo & info on the village FB page? Is the cat microchipped?

Poor cat.

I know it’s too late now, but never leave any windows open. Of course the cat escaped. My car will jump out an upstairs window.

Why in earth was a window open at all?

I really hope you find the poor cat. If you do your MIL needs advice on how to help the cat adjust and keep it safe. Small room, no stress, no escape routes.
