Sudden onset deafness in cats

Just wondering what the causes could be? My cat was fine all summer, then we went away for a couple of weeks (cat sitter came during this time) and when we returned we noticed that he seemed to be hearing less. As in we’d come in and he would still be sleeping instead of behind the door, we’d call him and get no reaction (more than usual, not even the twitching of the ears when choosing to ignore), if we’re not in the same room and he can’t see us he starts miaowing loudly etc.

He’s been scratching his ears so I cleaned them out but there is no gunk, no ear mites or inflammation that I can see. He can hear some noises, like when I dropped my keys or there was hammering, but anything less loud he doesn’t seem to pick up. Food wise he’s eating less, he asks for food then leaves most of it. I’m wondering if he has a sore throat linked to his ear problem (is that a thing in cats?). He had stomatitis when we got him but he no longer has any teeth and his gums don’t seem inflamed.

I had a vet appointment booked but my usual vet cancelled as she was unwell. The next nearest vet is a bit of a hike away and I’m car-less at present so won’t be able to take him until next weekend, which is frustrating. I guess I’m a bit concerned he might have a tumour rather than an infection, he is a rescue and arrived with a shedload of health problems which we treated and he got better, but I’m worried his early life may have negatively impacted his long term health.
