What's this rolling behaviour?

Both my cats have been rolling in the same patch of dirt today. One has done it loads and then the other did some more rolling. What are they doing? Is there something on the mud? (They have done this out the front before but not so obsessively and not both in exactly the same patch.)

I wonder if another cat has sprayed in that area?

I had one cat who used to dust bathe in the sun or if she got a bit itchy

Have you de-flead them? Haribo, mainly white was de-flead today and he's got grubby grey patches on him where he's rolled around in dusty gravel.

He also likes rolling around in the compost in the greenhouse and sits in the earth on my raised bed which is covered in netting to keep butterflies out. He's my chubster grubster.

My cat always rolls in the exact same spot. I assume she likes the soil there or it is warm or one of the plants is having a catnip type effect on her. The neighbour's cat visits rarely but that's his favourite spot too.

That was my husbands guess. He thought they were trying to get their own scent on the mud instead.

They just like doing it don’t they? They always look very happy to roll over in dirt.
