What is this on my cat?

My lovely ginger tom was having a nap on the bed when I noticed this on him. I have no idea what this is and how he could have done it. He is walking absolutely fine and is totally himself. Anyone got any ideas? I thought maybe he caught himself on something but the furr has gone completely from the area.

Looks like an animal bite where a tooth has gone through the skin and they now have a nasty infection / or an abcess. You need to take to the vets for antibiotics .

Agree it looks like an animal bite or burst abscess. Won’t always need antibiotics, our vet said just bathe it with cooled boiled water and stop the cat licking the area. The loss of fur will probably be your cat biting it away from the wound.

TaraR2020 · 14/09/2021 12:21

Agree its a puncture wound.

Keep an eye on it for signs on infection and if it doesn't heal or becomes infected then it'll be a trip to the vets.

You can add a little salt to the cooled boiled water mentioned above to help protect against infection.

Burst abcess from a bite. The vet will give an antibiotic jab and it'll heal in a few days.

Wolfiefan · 14/09/2021 12:32

That needs a vet. Also when you say tomcat do you mean unneutered?

Mummyofboys88 · 14/09/2021 13:33

Thanks for your replies everyone, much appreciated. He is neutered. There is an unneutered cat in the area who regularly comes around upsetting other cats. My poor baby boy, it's horrible seeing them hurt isn't it.

Okay my cat has been outside living and couldn't find him for a month now he just finally came inside last night I noticed he's really skinny and he has this thing going on with his ear. Can anyone help me and tell me what it is and for a side note he does have ear mites that I am presently trying to get rid of.

He needs a vet. What do they say?

That looks very nasty & probably infected, I would get to the vet very soon. That's always a good idea anyway if they've been missing for more than a few days.

Wolfiefan · 19/03/2025 19:30

I can’t believe any vet saw that and said just keep it clean. He needs to be seen. You need proper vet treatment for that and the mites too. Is he neutered?

We're talking about 2 different cats here. The vet told the OP to just keep that little puncture wound clean, that nasty ear wound is @Busterbrown1mama 's cat who has just returned after going missing for a month.

That needs antibiotics looks like mine when he had a burst abscess and had antibiotics for a week.

Ask for a prescription ear mite treatment too.
