We have just arranged to adopt a 10 week old female kitten, but we already have a 10 year old male cat.
What is the best way to introduce them to each other (other than very gradually!)
I know about the initial swapping smells thing, but step 2 apparently involves using a transparent piece of plastic or gauze across the door so that they can see each other without being in the same room?! Does this sound right? Please tell me what worked for you!

I suggest keep them as apart as possible until older cat gets curious about the younger one. You have a decent chance as it's an older male and a younger female kitten.

I got two 8 week old kittens (toms) when I had a 10ish y o tomcat. The old boy sat under the sofa and hissed at them for a bit, the kittens explored the room largely ignoring him, and they were comfort suckling off him within days.

He was a particularly laid back old boy, though.
