Mouse in the house

Eek....we seemed to have got past the live vermin a couple of months ago but DC has brought 2 live mice in during the last fortnight and I'm pretty sure there is another lurking under my cabinets as I've heard rustling and when I've pulled the board off there's some chewed wood. Lots of nice places under there a mouse could hide and cat is now asleep under the table....can't decide whether to put a trap under there and try to put the board back or leave open to hope cat will catch it. Any recommendations? I can't see how the mouse would have got under there vu5 there will no doubt be ways. Concerned it will move into the rest of the house!

My cat likes to bring mice in and he was looking suspicious at the end of the kitchen recently. Turns out he had lost the mouse behind the washing machine. It was there for a couple of days before I realised. I heard rustling, so went down to investigate. I saw him poke his head out but I had no way of getting it out.

I ordered a twin pack of humane traps, put peanut butter on the inside and caught him within 2 hours! I was quite pleased with myself when I released him until DH said I had just made the mouse the tastiest snack ever because he had got peanut butter on him whilst in the trap Blush

I've left the traps out and check them often because better to be safe than sorry!

I've not got any humane traps only a massive rat trap and I'm hoping this isn't needed! I managed to rescue and release the last one by hand. I don't particularly mind mice generally but I don't want one in my kitchen. I dread to think how long this has been there!

Get a bag of chocolate coins and put down a couple of the smallest ones. They are fab mouse detectors - if you suddenly find little bits of chewed foil (or a coin vanishes) then you can put traps down.

EatSprayGlove · 22/08/2021 20:06

Oh interesting tip! My youngest is desperate for chocolate coins so I suspect that is where they would vanish in our house Wink

I fear I might just try the trap with some peanut butter. The cat is asleep and I'm just sat with a dustpan and brush looking at where I assume the mouse is but knowing it could be anywhere now. I keep my flour in the cupboard it is under so I'm now thinking it can't have been there long and wondering if I'm imagining it?

I feel your pain. We currently have a mouse in our living room. That our cat brought in this morning. So far one of our traps has just given it a free lunch. We've set up another and fingers crossed it will work!

EatSprayGlove · 22/08/2021 20:15

Oh dear @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee Wine my DP is hugely unimpressed as he hates mice and is not fond of cats so it's all rather fraught.

I've set the trap but am divided between being scared the trap won't work for a mouse and scared it will! I've put a note on the cupboard door reminding me not to let the cat in there!

We put our trap in the fireplace, the fireguard stops the cats getting near it. If this trap fails I'm buying a humane trap. I'm also hoping our cats catch it overnight too!

Livefortherain · 22/08/2021 21:09

This is the type I ordered. It wasn't this particular one because I can't find that listing now but it looked exactly like this. The reviews on this say it all.

We have a mouse debt - I've counted the ones in and the one out and we are still two short over the last month or so. I've checked the usual places and fingers crossed they walked out by themselves through an open door. There's no maggots yet, anyway Grin

Usually I leave the kick boards off in the kitchen if I can't see the mouse.

Otherwise we have a mouse poking stick and a bucket with lid and attempt to poke the mouse out somewhere DH or Dcat can catch it.

I have had pest control lay traps and bait in my house and the guys who came told me that if you see one mice it is likely there will be more. Mice breed very rapidly and once they are in your house it is really hard to get rid of the buggers without professional treatment options.

My issue with the mouse is that they actually live somewhere else but my cat has clearly decided she wants a pet mouse and keeps bringing them in, demon that she is!!!

Thank you @Livefortherain I will order a set as I am terrified DC will catch her paw in one which is why I haven't ever set one before today.

We have left the kickboards off before but there are so many hideyholes in our house @NapoleonOzmolysis that it didn't help so I have put them back on! We have that metallic insulation behind all the cupboards and I think it's just run up the back of there so cat can't get it sigh

Have just heard a noise under the cupboard but it didn't sound like the trap actually going off so now I don't know whether to look or leave!

Our mouse doesn't live in here, one of our cats brought it in and let it go, just for a laugh. Its a frequent event in our house I'm afraid!!

I've ordered more traps as thd bloody thing is still around, I thought we'd caught it last night, but no, it was just chewing the bait trap and waited till I pulled the trap towards the to run away, its so bloody brazen!

Essentially we're just leaving out food for a mouse in the various traps we've got set up, it seems to know hos to not set them off!

EatSprayGlove · 24/08/2021 07:48

Awww @TheLovleyChebbyMcGee you now are the owner of a pet mouse!

Success!! The humane trap worked, the mouse was having a nose around earlier and I managed to scare it in the direction of the trap!!

Totally different but my boss has cats. Before work her cat had come in with a mouse and dropped it in the kitchen, mouse shot off!
She put down a trap, collected her work bag and left. Can you see where this is going.
So end of shift, we are getting changed and her mouse shot out of her work bag and across the changing room. We caught it and put it in a sample pot ( work in hospital) and she took it home to be released 😂

EatSprayGlove · 27/08/2021 13:04

That's my favourite mouse story @drinkingwineoutofamug Grin
