Programming a Petporte microchip cat flap

When you programme the flap for the first time, how long does the cat need to be under the porch for the chip to be read?

Anyone?

It is only seconds and it beeps when their chip is read.

Hmm. I wonder whether FattyCat's chip isn't working then. Is there any way of checking, that doesn't involve taking him to the vet?

I also wonder whether to install it just as a catflap, and worry about programming it later.

Have installed a 4 way cat flap with tunnel. Cats use it easily. Now need to change to microchip one as intruders coming in. Will the cats get the hang of it or will they be scared and need retraining? They are 2 rescue cats.

Some people on here have had problems with the flap not reading the chip but it scans at the vets surgery so it’s definitely there.
