I had my cat put to sleep.

He had severely broken his leg and it was going to cost too much to fix him given his age.

He was 13 and deaf and had no sense of smell.

I miss him so much I feel like a cat murderer. The kids are at their dad's and I haven't told them.

He was the most affectionate cat I've ever had.

Life is shit sometimes.

So sorry to hear this, but you didn’t have a choice and made the kindest decision for your cat. It’s a hard thing to have to tell your children but hopefully they’ll understand that there was no other option. Flowers

You are not a cat murderer. You did the best thing for him. It's a terrible decision to have to make but in the circumstances it was the right one. You clearly loved him and I am sure he had a lovely life with you. It's hard not to dwell on the end and you will miss him dearly but it's better to have had him in your life x

Re fixing his leg, would you have wanted your cat to go through all that unnecessary pain, cost aside, and not have the same quality of life he had before? When we had to have our dog put to sleep, the vet said that, when his father was dying slowly and painfully, he (the vet) felt so bad that animals can be helped in these situations but humans can’t. Having been present when our dog was put to sleep, I know that it was a calm, peaceful and pain free end for him, which he so deserved as he had been an amazing pet. We, his owners, were the ones suffering, just as you are now suffering the loss of your beloved cat. But take consolation from the fact that you gave him a very good life for thirteen years.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure he had 13 wonderful years with you. It's a hard decision to make but it sounds like it was the right one for him.

Anordinarymum · 04/08/2021 00:14

What you did was kind. You did the best thing for your wonderful companion who trusted you to look after him always and that is what you did.
Its always sad when you have to make the right decision. I have done this so many times now and honestly it never gets easier, but its the right thing to do.
Bless you x x

I agree. That it sounds like you did the best thing for him. It's an awful decision to have to make. But it's the best thing you can do. ThanksThanks

Gorgeous! You're right, life is shit sometimes but you weighed up the options and made a choice for the best.

Procrastination4 · 04/08/2021 17:16

He’s a gorgeous cat! I have a soft spot for grey tabbies!

Arrowheart · 04/08/2021 17:25

You did the kindest thing. He was a beauty. Was going to ask if you would like to post a photo and tell us more about him.

LozzaChops101 · 04/08/2021 20:33

I had the same scenario with mine this afternoon. I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks

I'm so sorry, @Pumpkinstace. I would have done exactly the same, for what that's worth. Hugs to you and the family.
