Cat Litter Smell

Nothing terrible-no diarrhoea etc. Covered litter tray. Just generally stinky wee in the heat....it's Breeder Celect paper litter. Maybe that's the issue? I've read about ppl sprinkling baking soda over the litter. Anyone ever done that? Don't want to put them off & cause any poop accidents....

I like clumping litter as you can remove pee and poo so it stays cleaner longer

Bargebill19 · 28/07/2021 15:37

Yep clumping lavender scented litter and a once a week total disinfectant and clean/refill.
Hot weather can be a stinky time. !

MyShoelaceIsUndone · 28/07/2021 21:04

I use Catalan and for the most part there’s no smell

TooStressyTooMessy · 28/07/2021 21:20

Ooh interesting. We have newish cats and are using that same litter as it is what they were using in the rescue centre and hey advised us to continue. It gets stinky really quickly. Much more quickly than I remember cat litter getting before when we used to use it. I wanted to keep using it as it seems more environmentally friendly but Catsan etc definitely seem better for the smell.

NorthernDramaLlama · 28/07/2021 21:24

Def catsan! We ran out and bought wood pellet based cat litter. The litter tray is in the bathroom and we had to brush our teeth in the kitchen as the smell was so bad!

LittleCatDog · 28/07/2021 21:26

I used to use Nullodor cat litter and there was hardly any smell but I prefer clumping and use Sanicat now. You can get scented ones which are good. Zooplus does good offers on litter and food and a rewards points system if you haven't looked on there. I also feed them Royal Canin Indoor 27 which reduces stool odour.

dementedpixie · 28/07/2021 21:34

I found Catsan was bad for smells
Clumping was much better

icedcoffees · 28/07/2021 21:41

We use Cat's Best from ZooPlus - poo and clumps are scooped daily and it lasts weeks without needing to be changed completely - I just too up weekly.

We have three house cats and it honestly doesn't smell. I use litter tray liners too so on changing day they can just be put straight into bin bags and you don't need to wash and disinfect the trays.

A 40l bag from ZooPlus does three litter trays and lasts about two months. It only costs £25.

How old is your cat!? As a kitten ours was incredibly stinky! She for better as she grew. And now as long as the ground is soft enough she goes outside!

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/07/2021 21:47

I've been using World's Best litter for about 6 years now; I use the multicat version (we have 2 cats) & don't notice urine smells. It clumps really well, & only a small amount of tracking - and unlike wood pellets it doesn't hurt if you accidentally stand on a piece barefoot Grin

xxxJess123xxx · 28/07/2021 21:55

Catsbest is absolutely brilliant, no smell whatsoever. Lasts forever. Indoor kitty x

Shmithecat2 · 30/07/2021 22:30

I've multiple (6) cats and use Sanicat Clumping. It works really well. I do scoop several times a day though.

Same here. It really is the best.

We got a new kitten in April, I am using Petsathome kitten soft and sensitive non-clumping. Actually it does clump, which I am pleased about as it is easy to remove clumps. But there is no smell whatsoever, I think it is the best litter I have ever had in that respect and I am a life long cat owner.

dancemom · 31/07/2021 10:49

Pets at Home do a deodorant that you just sprinkle over the litter, it's great

despondentatwork · 02/08/2021 07:07

Wow, loads of great advice! Thanks all!

I use Catsan smart pack-it has a nappy liner underneath so wee goes into that and you just take out the poo. Whole thing lifts out to change. If you have an indoor cat, it needs changing every week-10 days but longer if your cat only occasionally users her tray.

Amrapaali · 02/08/2021 11:32

@despondentatwork We have a new kitten; the first few days her litter box really stank out the place.

I got this in desperation: www.amazon.co.uk/Deodorate-Deodorizer-Neutralizer-Battery-Wardrobe/dp/B08PTY7C79?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It sticks on the wall near the litter tray and refreshes the air every 10 minutes.

It really does work, so much so that if I unplug it to recharge, I can immediately smell the litter tray. Give it a go
