Lion shave

Just saw a local black cat which has suddenly become grey where all his hair has been removed from his neck down, leaving the black fur on his socks and tail. I had to do a double take and then googled it to see that it's called a lion shave.
Has anyone done this to their cat and why?

I like to do it too my fluffy cat. She gets burrs on her fur that turn into knotd in the blink of an eye but i dont think she'd cooperate, i get attacked removing any from her tummy or legs.

I presume the cat was unconscious at the time? That's a very brave owner otherwise.

One of neighbours had this done to a long haired cat that they rehomed from a rescue. The cat had been badly neglected and her coat was too matted for normal grooming. It was done at the vets under sedation.

Would be great for my cat she is so fluffy, and as someone up thread said she gets so much stuck in her fur and I literally loose limbs trying to brush her.
I cannot understand how this can be done without sedation. I suppose it's nice and cool for them at the moment.

My long haired Persian would tolerate a lion cut without sedation. But I wouldn't do it too her. Some cats have terrible fluffy coats, that are a nightmare. Fortunately mine has a beautiful coat, that's fairly easy.

He is a long haired and I’d noticed recently that his fur was a bit patchy. Could have been shaved because of the heat or some skin condition I suppose.

Hes probably just had individual matted bits cut out leaving him patchy and at some point it was better to just take it all off and start again.

Matted fur can trap all kinds of nastiness and pull on their skin. Some cats get their bums shaved to help keep that area clean.
