I've got a lovely 13 week old kitten. He's happy, healthy, playful, growing well. I love him so much.

A few days ago I happened upon a thread by a future kitten owner, asking for advice on what she'd need. 'Another kitten to keep it company, kittens do much better in pairs' was the reply x 100.

"What?? Am I damaging my precious baby John by not providing him with a playmate??" thought I. Did a bit of research, turns out to be true, kittens are happier with a friend. So... meet Steve.

What have you done OPGrin Steve is adorable. I've got a black cat squatter I'm trying to find a home for but really I love him & don't want to give him up Wink. I've never had a short haired black cat before. He's just lovely 😍

My local rescue centre homes litters of kittens in pairs (& then almost always one of them with mummy!cat if she was rescued with them) precisely for this reason; & when they rescue hoarded cats split them down into smaller friendship groups of 2 or sometimes 3, bar those who make it clear that they’re with Sartre on what hell is. So I’d been preparing to adopt 2 kittens when I ended up taking in one third of an attic-dwelling 8-week-old surprise!litter (VERY surprising: cat broke into attic from neighbouring property) with no idea of Outside, Regular Meals, Toys, nor indeed Consistent Human Presence.

My 2 were 9 in April & still delight in snuggling up together (not so much in this weather, though they still groom each other & nobly attempt to nap on me as usual, eventually settling for languidly flopping against me); playing together; & generally Being Besties.

So yes. Basically you have made the best decision EVER & Steve & John are ADORABLE. Black & ginger (of any sort) is, of course, an iconic cat coat combination. And as long as they don’t manage to do structural damage, what does the sofa matter? You’ll be wanting some throws anyway for the fur situation, no? Wee bit more seriously on the sofa front, I find the Beaphar spray - it’s non-aerosol, if that’s a consideration for you - to stop cats & dogs from scratching/chewing works well. You need to keep on top of it though, & it’s best to clean with pet-friendly stain-remover stuff [Pets At Home make an own-brand one but Simple Solution is the Big Name] to get out the scent their wee paws are leaving behind as they scratch, dry it, THEN spray the deterrent on.

Our cats quite like cardboard to scratch. Especially if destined for the recycling.
