So sad

Our cat is at the vet right now and it looks like it's time for him to be PTS. We've had him for 10 years. He was there through everything, our little boy adores him. How will I explain what's happened? I have to go to work later today but I keep crying, I need to pull it together but I'm so sad.

He's gone. They found cancer in his nose and it had started to affect his facial bones. His kidneys were struggling and he was anaemic. I've called into work and said I can't go in today, it's too much.

Sorry for your loss op.

Wolfiefan · 20/07/2021 13:05

Oh I am so very very sorry.
I think it’s the blue cross have info on what to tell children. I also think it’s them who have a phone line you can call regarding pet loss. You’re grieving the loss of a family member.
I don’t know the age of your little one. We told our children that our cat was very very ill and the vet couldn’t make her better so she dies. Simple and avoids misunderstandings. Don’t use phrases like put to sleep. Children can then be afraid to sleep.
Take today just for you. Flowers

Thank you all for your kind wishes. I didn't think it would hit me this hard. It's been a really tough year for lots of reasons and this is just the last thing we needed. He was such a special cat.

He was a much loved member of your household, you gave him 10 happy years, and then you made the heartbreakingly difficult yet fair decision for him to go without suffering. That is love. He will forever be in your heart. I am so sorry for your loss Flowers

Want2beme · 20/07/2021 21:01

So sorry for your sad loss. It is so hard when you have to say goodbye. Give yourself time. I think you can tell your little boy the truth, that he was very poorly and that fortunately we can help to end their suffering. That it's the kindest thing we can do for themFlowers

Cazzovuoi · 20/07/2021 21:03

I am so sorry, it’s absolutely heartbreaking. They leave such a massive hole in our hearts and lives. Do you want to share a photo of him?

Arrowheart · 20/07/2021 21:05

Sending you so much love. We recently lost our 9 year old to cancer. Gone far too soon. Hope you find lots of comfort in remembering all the happy times. I never knew how much of my heart my cat had hold of in his paws, he was amazing. I can understand just how hurt you must be. The loss gets easier but today will be one of the hardest days. Xx

I'm so sorry Flowers

Tiredmum100 · 20/07/2021 21:41

Sorry OP, its horrible. I had to have my 13 year old cat PTS last year. I know how heart breaking it is. They are part of the family. Look after yourself. I still miss my girl a year on but she's always with me.

Defiantly41 · 20/07/2021 21:46

@PintOfBovril
Oh do sorry for your loss it is heart breaking when you have to make that decision.

I agree with PP be honest with your DC , don't say pts , or saying thing like it's time you went to sleep may scare them
Also avoid things like gone to play on a farm , a friend told her DC this and the poor child was heart broken that his dog did not want to live with him any more.

Furries · 21/07/2021 02:29

I’m so sorry, it’s devastating especially when it feels they are too young to leave us.

I’d echo what others have said re being careful with wording round PTS.

You’ve had to say goodbye to a much loved member of your family, just allow yourself you grieve. It can take time, but you will always know that you showed your true love - which is releasing your cat from pain whilst knowing how much you’d hurt.

💐 for you. And post whenever you need to, so many on here know how tough it feels,

Arrowheart · 21/07/2021 07:20

How are you today OP? Hope your night was ok x

TroysMammy · 21/07/2021 07:25

Flowers so sorry.

PintOfBovril · 21/07/2021 08:30

Thank you all so much. You've all been so kind. I just feel so sad, it was so hard coming downstairs this morning and not having him to feed, change his water...I just want to stroke his head and give him a kiss. I will miss him so much. He was such a comical character and so gentle.
We told our little boy that the cat was poorly and went to the doctor but the doctor couldn't make him better so he died. And that when we want to see him we can look at pictures or think about him together. He seemed okay with that but has asked for the cat this morning.
Thanks again everyone. This is such a nice space and I really appreciate your kindness.

So sorry to hear about your lovely cat. They really are so important to our lives. No advice really, it's the worst part of being a cat owner. Take care of yourselves.
