New kitten - How long to keep in 1 room

Hello All
We have collected a new kitten - he seems very confident and happy, delighted to chase anything he can find (ping pong balls, bits of paper etc). He is 5 months old.

We are keeping him in 1 room for now to get used to us as it's only been a couple of days. What are people's expereinces about how long to keep the cat in 1 room for ? (NB we won't be letting him outside into the garden for another 4 - 6 weeks), but I would of course like to get him used to the other rooms in our house).

Aww cute cat!

I'd let him out now. I only kept mine in one room for longer because I was introducing her to another cat in the house.

Has he been neutered? I wouldn't normally let a kitten out side until 8 months.

We have two new kittens and they've been exploring the house while we're home this weekend, with the bathroom door shut just in case. They've loved it and go back in the front room at night which they're happy with. All ok so far! Lovely kitten by the way!

I didn’t know you were supposed to keep them in one room. I showed mine where his tray was in the downstairs loo and let him wander about as he pleased.

We only shut ours in one room overnight, otherwise they had free access to all of downstairs.

Thank you Name and Norbert! Yes he's been neutered, vaxxed, chipped - seems very healthy and happy.

Our newbie had the run of the house from the day he arrived at 11 weeks. Though we do now close the bedroom doors to keep him out as the windows are open and, as he's an avid fly catcher, we don't want him launching himself at an open window. He knows where his litter tray is so that's all that matters Smile

He’s a cutie!.

The cat will let you know when he’s ready to come out.

BookWorm45 · 18/07/2021 17:28

Thank you all! I think we'll be letting him out to explore shortly

If he’s happy to explore I would let him explore. Just be aware of open windows!
