We recently adopted a young cat from a reputable rescue and she had to be put down 6weeks later after a diagnosis of FIP.

She had never been outside, but our older cat does.
Older cat seems fine, no symptoms, very robust and healthy.

We’d like to adopt another young cat/kitten in due course, but I’m terrified it’ll happen again.
Could our older cat be carrying the infection and pass it on again?
How can we prevent it and protect any new cat?
I feel so guilty that we couldn’t give her a good life 😞

No advice, but it really wasn't your fault. So sorry about your poor little cat.

Thank you for replying.
I feel like I should have known about it, or should have noticed sooner.
She had a fat little tummy, which I thought meant she was eating well after going off her food. Turns out it was fluid and wet FIP.

Worried about our older cat as have read they can carry it and be seemingly healthy until stressed/immune compromised.
What if he comes down with it too? It just seems so cruel 😞
