I think my cat is dying

My lovely soft cat seems to be ill. He’s lost half his body weight, his spine and pelvis are sticking out badly. The vet advises against tests as they’ll cost £700 and instead opted to try steroid injection, he thinks it’s lymphoma. I hate seeing my lovely boy waste away. He looks so sad and miserable.

My previous cat was PTS after suddenly being poisoned and I never got over the feeling that I could of, should of done more to save him but his organs were failing and the vet said it was the kindest thing but I was left with a feeling of wishing I’d have fought harder to save him so I guess that’s a lot of my reluctance to accept, and the absence of tests.
Those who suggest I should get tests done, maybe you’re right, it would bring me peace of mind but it’s not fair on him and the vet assured me that whatever it was steroids would be first line treatment anyway. He’s gone from being 4.5kg to 2.4kg.

My boy lost a lot of weight very quickly and was displaying signs of discomfort (crying etc, which was totally out of character). He had only been at the vets two weeks prior for his annual check-up. Bloods were done which determined a tumour and she advised PTS, but we agreed on imaging too, just in case there was the possibility of treatment for him.

Transpired that the tumour in his stomach had split, so toxins were were leaking into his system. Nothing could be done and I had to let him go. He was only 10.5.

This was 16 months ago and I’m still heartbroken, but I know that I did the right thing for him as quickly as I could. Please, get bloods and imaging done ASAP so that you can make your decision ASAP. I can understand your reluctance, and am so sorry regarding your other cat, but you are the advocate for your cat and he needs you to act for him right now.

I think, at this stage, it is unlikely that steroids are going to have any impact. I’m quite surprised at the approach your vet is taking and I think I’d be looking for a new practice for future pets.

Wishing you strength, it’s the worst part of being a cat slave.

Cat seems to have perked up in past 24 hrs. He’s now trying to get out the house when he previously couldn’t be bothered. Hopefully means the steroids have kicked in and are helping. He’s back at vets in a few days so fingers crossed it’s a good sign
