I accidently stole a cat

I accidently stole a cat. The cat started to visit me at the start of first lockdown and I think he may of been about 6months old. He was full of fleas, had worms (I could see them in his poo) and kept stealing food off my kitchen side. We have a lot of strays in the area. I put a paper coller on him and no one rang. I flead, wormed and started feeding him. He was a scrapper, got injured so I took him to the vet. No chip, so vet chipped him to me and I paid about £300 in vets bills. I thought nothing of it and accepted that I now have a cat (I couldn't leave it out injured and PDSA wouldn't see him during the pandemic as not life threatening). I'm not a cat person and am actually allergic to them. Anyway, turns out the cat did have a home (found out through friends a couple of months later and owner had proof) so I hand delivered him back to his actual owner along with chip details and change over ownership forms. The owner did not offer to reimburse me vets fees but I didn't really mind as he needed treatment. Cat still visited multiple times a day, slept in the shed overnight but I did not feed him (to encourage him to not visit).

Fast forward a couple of months, I have a call from a vets who say they have my injured cat.....erm I don't have a cat anymore but it turns out I do as the actual owner didn't change the details over (I should have checked tbf) so I contacted owner to explain about the cat in the vet. They reluctantly agreed that I could keep the cat as he seems to prefer it here but owner was really upset. I had him treated, vaccinated and neutered and now he never leaves the house, he's like my shadow. But I feel so so bad that I have essentially stolen someone's cat (twice) and I'm finding it hard to bond with him because of the guilt (silly I know as its been nearly a year since he officially came).

De-fleaing, worming and neutering are the absolutely basic of what a cat needs. I do not agree with encouraging people's pets to come live with you but if a pet owner doesn't do any of the three basics, they're not pet owners. They are animal neglecters. In this very rare case I think you did the right thing. The owners are useless pricks.

@Wolfiefan

I hate it when people steal cats. By that I mean enticing them into their houses with food and treats. Making no effort to find out if the cat has an owner. You did NOT steal the cat. You found a clearly neglected cat and tried to find its owners. You got it treatment and looked after it. You found out it had a home and returned it. Then they decided they CBA with it and don’t want to pay vet bills. (Rubbish was it because they thought it was happier with you. They clearly didn’t care a bit about that cat’s happiness or even its basic needs.) I think you’ve done a lovely thing. That cat has been so lucky to find you and I’m not surprised he doesn’t want to leave your side. You must seem like an angel who has improved his life in every single way. May you both have many happy years together. Flowers
^^ This!

She can’t have been that upset, she didn’t go to the vets to get her injured cats treatment sorted she gave him to you instead.

Most of us here would actually go to the vets if our cat was injured.

nettie434 · 12/07/2021 00:24

You're not the one who should be felling guilty. It's the previous owner who left their cat hungry and neglected who should be feeling guilty. No wonder the cat doesn't want to leave you!

Bargebill19 · 12/07/2021 00:29

Well, they couldn’t even be arsed to change the chip details. Says it all.
Cat has a good new home - you. Cat chose you. Cat has taste!!

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 12/07/2021 01:46

Agree with others, you didn't steal the cat. Cat chose you.

You were kind to it when it's previous owner didn't care so it has made the decision to live with love, care, comfort.

MemyselfandI2019 · 12/07/2021 12:10

Thank you again for the lovely comments, I know I am being daft feeling sorry for his previous owners. I just think of others too much (hence why I acquired The King 🤣). So last night I took antihistamines and he came and cuddled all night in bed with me, I woke up this morning with his head next to me on the pillow purring. I had a dog who was pts 2 years ago who was my absolute love and joy (other than my dc) and I've not felt ready to get another since. It sounds silly but The King turned up in my life during a low point and he has really helped me and dc through a lot. Thanks to you guys not berating me for 'stealing' someone's cat, I have let my guard down and he is definitely part of the gang. I never wanted a cat but bloody hell, does this one bring so much to my life!

If they couldn’t even be bothered to change the chip details then they frankly don’t deserve to have an animal at all . Cats are not stupid , he probably picked you out because he realised he had been misplaced with crappy owners .

Eskarina1 · 12/07/2021 12:19

Isn't it interesting that she reluctantly came to the conclusion that the cat was better with you at the precise moment when owning the cat meant a big vet bill. What a coincidence

AlfonsoTheMango · 12/07/2021 13:10

I love a happy ending! OP, I am glad that The King has brought sun to your life.

ItsNotNormalLove · 12/07/2021 13:20

You've done a wonderful thing OP Thanks

But you did forget to show us a photo of The King! Grin

GrandmasCat · 12/07/2021 13:24

Oh please, you didn’t steal a cat, you were taken advantage of your good nature big time by irresponsible cat owners.

Beamur · 12/07/2021 13:26

You two were meant to be.
Don't feel guilty.
I have a cat visitor but I know who owns him and they're happy to share. He doesn't come in the house but joins us for dog walks and gets a fuss and a few treats in return. I think he has a few friends dotted about.

MemyselfandI2019 · 12/07/2021 13:30

I'm new to this but here is The King....

Beautiful and smart

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/07/2021 13:35

Doesn’t look neglected now then eh?! Grin

He found you. No theft necessary.

He went somewhere where his needs would be met.

Landed on all four I’d say … Smile

Bargebill19 · 12/07/2021 13:37

Oh he knows his own mind! One very happy and intelligent cat king!!
Op you’ve been nabbed by a cat, not sure he other way around. I’ve always believed that animals and cats in particular, know where the good homes are, and which humans need a companion. You were one of those and now you have The King.

JonahofArk · 12/07/2021 13:41

You did not steal a cat, you rescued a cat. Don't feel any guilt because you did a good thing.

AlfonsoTheMango · 12/07/2021 13:47

He looks contented and at peace with the world.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/07/2021 13:50

Cats vote with their feet if they're not getting what they need at home. He's chosen you Smile

ForeverFloating · 12/07/2021 13:56

You definitely rescued that cat, owners who leave their animal with fleas and worms do not deserve to be pet owners, it’s disgusting.
I don’t even like cats but he looks happy and content with you

IntermittentParps · 12/07/2021 14:02

If they can’t chip, neuter, worm, flea and seek vet care for their own cat then stuff them.
This nails it.
He clearly realised you would be a much better owner than them. That your ex-friend didn't understand this speaks volumes about them.

He's beautiful Smile I love a ginger cat.

BrumCahoots · 12/07/2021 14:35

Don't feel guilty at all .. the previous owners were rubbish and now the cat is happy .. stuff them !!

weekend2021 · 12/07/2021 15:03

So lovely to know that there are people like you out there OP. So many poor cats don’t have loving, caring parents. They can give so much pleasure and expect nothing but food, a warm place to sleep, and a few cuddles in return. Don’t feel even the tiniest bit guilt, just keep up what you’re doing!
