Cat anal glands

My cat is a plain old long haired moggy and over the last week she's been scooting across the floor. I've had a look at her rear end and she's got what looks like a couple of fur balls either side of her anus.

I've tried to pin her down and give her a brush but she's not too keen tbh. She's also a bit stinky down there too, a combo of poo in the matt and what I suspect might be blocked anal glands. I have an appointment with the vet next Monday, the earliest they could see me, but am keen to know what the treatment is for this? As a child, we had a dog with blocked anal glands, but I've not heard of it in cats before. Is it something we can prevent with dietary changes? She's 12 and a bit overweight.

There's no treatment as such I don't think, short of surgical removal of the glands which is only for serious cases. The vet will be able to drain them if they need it though, which will make her feel more comfortable. They just squeeze them like they do with dogs, so in theory you can do it at home but I feel it's a dangerous job best left to the experts Grin.

Diet wise I think just something decent quality, perhaps higher fibre - firmer poo helps keep them clear
