Spine condition in young cat

DC 2 is a Maine Coon. About 4 months ago we took him to the vets for clicking. Initially they thought it was his hip and knee. They then did and xray and thought hip dysplasia but sent it off to an expert. The expert has come back and believes knee and spine, with narrowing between L5 and L6. The vet has asked me to bring him back for free further investigations and he specifically wants to perform them guided by the specialist. I'm not sure whether he is very interested by the diagnosis as DCs age kept coming up, or it's just because it's taken a while to find out the issue.

Anyone any ideas what it could be? I've had a pet with arthritis and hip dysplasia, which is a very sad disease but don't know much about spinal disease. We isolating so can't go in until Friday next week.
